After a little bit more messing about I can report that the driver in MX Test does build on the 5.16.18 kernel perfectly well! Well, except for having to manually install nvidia-kernel-support first, but that's easy enough. Steam and 32 bit games in Wine now work again too, yay :celebrate2:
MX Linux 23 x64
