KDE Flickering

#1 Post by tekkaman »

Hello,

I´ve been testing MX-21 KDE via USB. I have a problem that is not present in the previous version. It starts flickering as soon as you see the spinning booting logo. Then it stops flickering and flickers when you interact with KDE. I will post both specs here to see if someone can spot something wrong. I´ve searched the internet but I haven´t found a solution other than disabling compositor. But I think compositor is needed for a good experience.

You need to check the resolution and refresh rate to ensure that they are correct for that laptop.

Also, you need to keep in mind that with all the parameters equal except the MX KDE version, the possibility exists that the back light in the laptop is dying and the demands of the newer KDE version are enough to produce the flickering symptom.

HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Just "maybe":

On MX-19 and before, there's no such weirdness, but on MX-21 (or maybe (due to) Debian 11) when you create an intel.conf to make it use "intel" driver such issues are solved (also suspend-wakeup ..) .. Yes, the weird part is: Though it already shows Intel loaded:

Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 compositor: kwin_x11 driver: loaded: intel

You can simply do it via "MX Tweak" ( ...you already have persistence enabled to make it permanent).

( This is just 1-2 of many examples )

Thanks for your replies guys. I use the laptop daily and I dont get flickering with 19.4. I always use the MX tweak to switch to intel drivers because that allows me to change the lcd brightness. If I don´t do that I can´t change brightness at all and stays 100% all the time. I made the compositor settings the same on both versions as you can see on the picture below. I suppose a difference between 19.4 and 21 is the kernel version. Do you guys think that could make a difference ? I´ve been using KDE for a while now and gotten used to it. It has a Windows 7 sorta performance for my old laptop. I really don´t want to go back to xfce.

In fact I was going to suggest that, too. You can try what happens with antiX 4.19 (even antiX 4.9) .. (... Or if you like only, 5.8 and before are still in (ahs) repo )

Please excuse my ignorance. I downloaded antix 4.19 kernel but I don´t know how to boot to it. Is the process different from USB ?

At the Grub screen, click on Advanced Boot Options and then select the 4.19 kernel. If it solves your problem, you can make it permanent with Boot Options in MX Tools.

Installing the antix-4.19 kernel does not solve the flicker problem in MX21 KDE (installed).

Sorry, I gave information about kernel 5.10 and "modesetting". Today I give the correct Quick System Info.
When the Intel driver is loaded, the flicker of KDE elements appears when moving the mouse cursor over the widgets on the taskbar and in the pop-up windows of system notifications, volume control,
network connections when moving the mouse cursor over the buttons inside them. Artifacts also flash on the session login screen (DM) and when drawing the movable logo of the "neural web" when loading the session.
