MXRPi with 7" display

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

My 13-yr-old grandson and I spent an hour or so hooking up an RPi 4 with 8GB to the Raspberry Official 7" touchscreen (about USD 70 shipped from Canada). Very fun project squeezed between turkey and apple pie!

It's gorgeous. In this shot I have the panel dropped in size to 25 and put on autohide, and a small dock with 32 pix icons on the left side on autohide as well. I don't have right-click emulation working so am using a mouse for now while I look around (had found one online guide, but it didn't work).

Vivaldi is really fast on it, and the thing generally is going to be quite usable. I have ordered a case for it and will definitely use the apparatus--maybe mounted on the wall to monitor something or other.

Very cool @Jerry3904 . Flux on the go :number1:
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

Touch screen definitely works. I can't get left click to work, though others have. I think it might work well for a music player, though things are still a bit wonky for me and I want it to settle down before I try anything permanent. Thinking of setting Spotify up on it...

@Jerry3904 awesome stuff, I'm sure your grandson will do all kinds of cool things with it in the future. :crossfingers:

I had gotten my nephew a kit a couple years ago for Xmas, I think these things are awesome gifts.
https://www.adafruit.com/product/3728 (I didn't pay that price, got it on Black Friday).

My biggest grip with some of the SBC touch screens is that they force you to have connections hanging off/out of the sides of the screen, even when you have a stand.

The newer Pi Foundation one helps with this if you get an angled power adapter. so if you're trying to mount it as is like in a wall or something its pretty good.

But again if you want to put it in a stand or case that holds the screen, the makers of these usually put the Pi near the end for ease of access to ports, which I guess is ok for some.
But when I am done tinkering and want it a finished product I don't want to see cables coming off the side lol. 9_9

I think the official SmartiPi Touch stands are some of the best to get, but they still have the issue with the Pi being too far on the side IMHO.

The more I use them I'm becoming a big fan of the 4-5" touch screens.

OK, I've got the long press = right click working! All laid out here:

https://fmirkes.github.io/articles/20190827.html

Autostart works no by adding to Startup file:

Code: Select all

#enable long press for right click
