anyone successful with MAME ?

Has anyone successfully installed MAME on MX and then run ROMs?
I find MAME to be very complicated in its configuration and I don't think its MX (although it could be) but after installation from the MXPI is when all hell breaks loose.
ROMs don't work, it crashes, it just does random things.
I would really appreciate some guidance on how to install it and run the ROMs.
