[Solved] wireless mouse not working  [Solved]

#1 Post by Ironfighter »

I have just encountered an unusual problem.
My Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard have suddenly stopped working but my laptop keyboard and touchpad are still working fine
I have tried putting the dongle in a different usb port.
My usb back up drive is working fine.
I have tried another usb mouse with a cable - the underside lights up but will not move the pointer.
Any advice would be appreciated
PS I have just noticed a mention of vulnerabilities & pointer sanitation in the CPU section of my system info which not knowing what they are or having noticed
them before, I don't like the look of. Is this a cause for concern?

Change the batteries. Wireless mice and keyboards usually take alkaline batteries, and when those fail they do so suddenly, unlike zinc carbon batteries that get weaker and weaker before they die.

Another possibility is that you have too many USB devices connected and the USB bus can't provide enough power to them all. Connect only the wired USB mouse and reboot and see if it starts working. BTW is that a known-good mouse? Does it work in other operating systems/on other computers? Does it, or your wireless mouse for that matter, work when you boot from your live USB?

Although I had changed the batteries on the mouse I hadn't done so with the keyboard so I did. This made no difference initially so I rebooted (something I was wary of doing given my problems with booting up on this machine). Nevertheless I bit the bullet and hit the restart button. Success - now posting using my Logitech keyboard and mouse (which in answer to your question have proved very reliable for about 12 months prior to this).

Thanks for your help.

12 months is about the extent of battery life for wireless mice. I think keyboard batteries may last a bit longer, but not if you have a backlit keyboard of course as the LEDs consume more power. It also depends on the keyboard, and how long the new batteries were sitting on the store's shelf when you bought them.

By the way, read the entry under News in the Welcome section at the top of every page regarding new forum features. There's a new and better way to mark topics solved than editing the first post's subject.
