Further research has shown that it works as expected if I change it to the DMZ White cursor theme, so there's just something about these particular DMZ Halo cursors that it doesn't seem to like. I even tested using them on a live USB and they do the same thing there. They work fine in Xfce though, I've been using them for years. Odd. Anyway, @confetti the solution is multipart: install a different cursor theme that's more easily visible if you prefer, then use Appearance -> Theme to select it in MX Fluxbox and click Apply as per Jerry's post #8, and if it doesn't "stick" between sessions try a different cursor theme; and/or increase the size of the cursor as per ceesians' post #9. Don't forget to log out and back in so it takes effect.

I only have the cursors that came default with the MX installation.
All three (Adwaita, DMZBlack, DMZ White) adhere to the 'xcursor.size' setting in ~/Xresources - and survive a reboot or logout/login. Haven't tried any other scalable cursor theme, as the default ones mostly suit my needs.

I did notice that lightdm login screen ignores any user preference --> and defaults to 'Adwaita' with cursor size 24 ?

Crystal and Oxygen cursors work also, from the stable repo. Chameleon may or may not work: I found them too ugly to even bother with them. Moblin doesn't work: it has the same issue as my DMZ Halo cursors from the test repo do. My vision issues require a cursor that contrasts with all different types of backgrounds, light and dark, so I generally go with a colored one or one with several different colors like the halos: white cursor with a black outline, then a colored halo effect around it all.
