@redhot

For what it's worth, these were the config changes that happened in Manjaro in March 2021. I have no idea of their significance, if any, in relation to Debian-Buster-based versions of the driver or sane config files, unless you have perhaps installed upgrades to (or new versions of) your scanner driver from Canon itself.

Code: Select all

(171/182) upgrading sane [######################] 100%
warning: /etc/sane.d/canon_lide70.conf installed as /etc/sane.d/canon_lide70.conf.pacnew
warning: /etc/sane.d/dll.conf installed as /etc/sane.d/dll.conf.pacnew
warning: /etc/sane.d/escl.conf installed as /etc/sane.d/escl.conf.pacnew

( 1/27) Creating system user accounts...
Creating group saned with gid 989.
Creating user saned (SANE daemon user) with uid 989 and gid 989.
Contents of the /etc/sane.d/canon_lide70.conf.pacnew file:

Code: Select all

# Options for the canon_lide70 backend

# Autodetect the Canon CanoScan LiDE 70
usb 0x04a9 0x2225

# Autodetect the Canon CanoScan LiDE 600
usb 0x04a9 0x2224

# device list for non-linux-systems (enable if autodetect fails):
#/dev/scanner
#/dev/usb/scanner0
The new lines are:
# Autodetect the Canon CanoScan LiDE 600
usb 0x04a9 0x2224
From what I can see, the /etc/sane.d/escl.conf.pacnew file relates to certain Epson scanners.

I didn't merge those changes into the existing conf files, since I don't use Canon or Epson devices. I also did not merge the changes in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf as the new config file completely removed Brother from the list of detectable networked scanners for some reason.

Frankly, as long as my Brother machine continues to work in each of my distros, I don't mess with sane config files nor upgrade brscan4. Brscan4 is the scanner driver for my model, of which there is an update indicated in AUR, and which I simply ignore.

That page is a pita! I put in into a Calc file for sorting. But even then trying to find a printer that met my needs on that list was painful. Maybe I got a single bad example (HP Laser NS 1020n), but I couldn't even find it on HP's website (plenty of 1020, no 1020n).

Edit: What that page really needs is what year the printer was last manufactured.

The file is attached to make everyone's life easier.

Best,
Michael

PS: What's the current version of HPLIP in MX?
FYI: HPLIP 3.20.3 supports your machine from here:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ease_notes

Hp developer's Portal has a working search function.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Thank you very much for all your efforts! I'm gonna compare this folder with the one on my wife's laptop as her "Simple Scan" works flawlessly. Maybe I can find the problem this way!? I did not make any changes or updates with files or drivers anyway.

In Arch-based systems, .pacnew files provide new config files for various programs, but they don't automatically merge the changes for you. You are supposed to compare the original xxx.conf file with the xxx.conf.pacnew file and decide if you want to merge the changes into the actual xxx.conf files.

Like I said, I have no idea if some automatic changes happened to Canon sane conf files in MX/Debian systems in an update, which may have affected the operation of your canon device.

Let me give you the contents of the dll.conf.pacnew file as well. You can see Brother is missing from that list! So I did not amend my existing dll.conf file which does include Brother.

Code: Select all

# dll.conf - Configuration file for the SANE dynamic backend loader
#
# Backends can also be enabled by configuration snippets under the dll.d/
# directory -- third party backends can drop their configuration file in
# this in this directory, named after the backend.
#
# The next line enables the network backend; comment it out if you don't
# need to use a remote SANE scanner over the network -- see sane-net(5)
# and saned(8) for details.

No, both folders are 100% identical! But: I'm absolutely happy with scangearmp2! It even activates the scanner when it is switched off. So I don't care why Simple Scan doesn't find the scanner anymore.

And a last information: Simple Scan and Xsane detect the scanner and thus work flawlessly when the MG3650 is connected via USB. When I pull the plug and they need to connect via WLAN they don't find the device anymore.

Maybe you need to reset/reconfigure your scanner driver to point to the scanner's network location?

I made use of the situation and deactivated WLAN and Bluetooth. So my device is on a "wired-only" mode.
