=[solved] How to format SDXC card in card reader-not in USB [Solved]
Re: How to format SDXC card in card reader-not in USB
meanwhile, I inserted the sdxc card in the reader, launched the MX disk manager and clicked quick format there for the device, using the option "for all systems" or whatever it is called. The device now is MBR, has all 128GB free, but does not have a file system. It is not mounted and will not automount. Gparted recognizes it, does not show a file system, but I can't format with a filesystem. So what to do now? I researched a bit and it seems I have to partition the sdxc. Or what?
Re: How to format SDXC card in card reader-not in USB
OK, here's where I am now. The MX disk manager just finished formatting the SDXC card. It has an MBR (I think), the format is given as "W95 FAT32 (LBA), FAT (32-bit version)", unmounted. Gparted picks it up as this "FAT (32-bit version)". Yet in the MX file manager it seems to appear as mounted (after I closed Gparted). Now I will create in it the two folders for my backups and will try to use LuckyBackup to do backup to the SDXC. I launched LB and went into my two backup tasks, using browse to navigate to the two folders I created on the newly formatted and named target. However, this is the message that LB gives me: "Destination directory: /media/mesblvd/Backup SDXC/DesktopBkup/
is empty or does not exist.
This task will not be skipped
The Destination Directory will be created if it doesn't exist and filled with new backup data." what is going on?

Re: How to format SDXC card in card reader-not in USB
sorry, vfat is shorthand for the fat32 file system on linux.Seeker wrote: Thu Apr 15, 2021 12:20 pm ok, as before I am looking at your instructions for doing the reformat manually. What does "vfat" mean? I want to change from exFAT to FAT32. The actual path to device is /dev/mmcblk0p1
Next question: does the sdxc card have to be mounted or unmounted when I do the manual command? Also, how to I get to the command line in MX Linux? I recall seeing an item in MX tools or accessories.
commandline is accessible via the system menu as "Terminal Emulator"
The card should be in the machine but not mounted.

I don't know how to advise you. We have no utilty called "MX Disk Manager" that formats anything. Let's assume that you got the card formatted, that's good.Seeker wrote: Thu Apr 15, 2021 6:18 pm OK, here's where I am now. The MX disk manager just finished formatting the SDXC card. Feel free to show the contents of the drive that LB is complaining is missing. You can use the terminal commandline or a screenshot of thunar with the directory open.
It also sounds like LB will create the missing/empty directory and populate with backup data. which may well be correct if the card was newly formatted and empty.

Re: How to format SDXC card in card reader-not in USB
tnx, dolphin_oracle. For formatting the SDXC card I used a tool from the whisker menu (is that the right term?) under Accessories called "Disks; manage drives and media". I used LuckyBackup to back up my Desktop and got 12 errors of this kind "rsync: mkstemp "/media/mesblvd/Backup SDXC/DesktopBkup/.A Biography of Jacob Appelbaum | ExpressVPN.html.IUvuaJ" failed: Invalid argument (22)" LB is still working on backing up my Data folder. So we shall see how everything with LB is working out. I guess I should go back to my thread here under Software, re LuckyBackup." After I see whatever you reply here, I guess I should close out this thread as solved.

I'm going to guess that the rsync doesn't like the "|" in that particular filename. the "|" is often used for command redirects.

Um, where is the "l" that you think is the "root of the evil"? meanwhile, I am rather perturbed that LB has taken over 3 hours to back up little more than half of my Data folder. When I first backed it up to this SDXC and to two USB external HDDs, the task only took an hour or so. The later incremental backups took little time. I will have to leave the computer on overnight and I shudder to think about what the backup situation will be in the AM!

Re: =[solved] How to format SDXC card in card reader-not in USB
thanks dolphin_oracle. Turns out that the symbol is a vertical line, not an "l". I just ran a test backup to a 32GB SDHC card and got the same type of errors, 22-file not copied. Indeed the few of these that I checked were all htm/html files, some of them with that vertical line. But I went back to one of my two external USB HDDs and found that those files were copied to the target by LB in backup. So the problem seems to be not with my specific 128GB SDXC card but with LB vs SD cards in general. I scanned the log of the last try with the SDXC card--an initial full backup, which took a crazy 6hrs plus. Weird. Anyway, the files not backed up were as before. The sample of them that I looked at were all htm/html files, though not all of them had that vertical line in the filename. The question is whether LB has a problem with htm/html files only or also other file types. BTW none of the problem files were hidden files in the source. So I guess I have to exclude SD cards from my repertoire of backup media. Which is sad, as I liked the speed and the form factor. Oh well. I will post this as a new topic in Software, LB.

the verical line is what I tried to show. its a "pipe" and it really shouldn't be in file names.
