Thanks, guys. I changed the CMOS battery, although I was fairly certain that was not the problem. The behaviour would have been the opposite with a near-dead battery - boot soon after shutdown but fail after a period. I have the opposite. I've also removed and reseated everything apart from the processor and power supply. The former is too much work and the power supply connections are securely latched onto the sockets.
I've decided the time has come to shelve this. I had to wait more than 10 hours before the machine would boot after yesterday's work and I can't afford a complete failure to boot. I'm firmly decided to upgrade as soon as AMD components become available again in the UK and there's no news of when this could be. One supplier was expecting a delivery on 26 March but that didn't happen. The machine runs fine 24/7 and I will continue that until I have the new components in hand.

Re: Story of graphics problem - and a question
Finally, after 5 months, some suitable processors and motherboards are back in stock. Or rather, upgraded alternatives are. I've just had delivered a Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro m-ITX motherboard, Ryzen 5 5600G processor and 16 GB low profile memory. Total cost about £100 more than I planned in April.
I will probably do the rebuild in about 10 days time - should be ready for MX-21 RC?
