MX 19.3 KDE HP Elitebook 840 G6 internal microphone not working possible hotkey issue

#1 Post by kiditty »

I have a new, clean install of MX19.3 KDE on an HP Elitebook 840 G6 (64 bit). The internal microphone does not work.

The microphone is not muted in alsamixer or pulseaudio volume control. However in the pulseaudio control the port is listed as "Microphone (unplugged)" with no other options available.

I suspect the problem might be with the hotkeys on the Elitebook keyboard, specifically the mute one. It has a little light that is permanently on no matter whether it is pressed or not. At first this key did nothing at all. Looking around for similar problems, I found and followed instructions here:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1138067 ... tebook-840

Now pressing the button makes a "microphone muted/unmuted" thing pop up, but it has no effect, and the light doesn't go off. Furthermore two of the other hotkeys do the same thing (the brightness ones, f3 and f4), and the networking one works in reverse: the networking is enabled when the light is off.

Further perhaps relevant information is that on my keyboard (which is Swedish) at least, the hotkey functions are the primary functions of the top row of keys, and you are meant to press fṇ̣̣ plus relevant key to get the f1/2 etc function.

So: my first and immediate problem is the muted mic, which I suspect is a hardware switch that is not being correctly tripped by the hotkey. This is a deal-breaker in terms of switching to MX, which is a switch I would like to make.

A second and perhaps related problem is that most of the hotkeys do not seem to be working properly. An acceptable solution for me would be to just disable them qua hotkeys and have them work as ordinary F keys -- especially if this solves the mic problem.

Any help very much appreciated.

Things to try:

1. Check if there's a more recent BIOS for your computer and flash it. It looks like there's a version 1.07.02 dated 06/11/2020.
2. Install the 5.09 kernel, headers and config files from the MX Package Installer's Test Repo tab and boot with it (advanced options in the grub boot menu.) If this fixes the issue you can make it your default kernel in MX Boot Options.
3. You may have to manually remap your hotkeys. See viewtopic.php?f=23&t=59836&p=592388. To find the keycode of the hotkey you want to remap run

Code: Select all

sudo showkey -k
in a terminal then press the key whose code you want to find. It times out in ten seconds so you have to be quick to press the key.

OK -- thank you. I am going to have to park this for a while now, because I need the mic working on this computer sooner than I will find time to try those things, so I'll go back to Kubuntu for now. But I will return to it when I have time.

I also have the same problems with the microphone. But my computer is different and I already have Kenel 5.10

I used the command sudo showkey -k, but when pressing the key nothing appears on the console. The microphone and brightness keys do not appear on the console. But the volume keys and others appear on the console code.

follows my settings:

@edugsdf a Lenovo Yoga isn't an HP Elitebook. You have completely different hardware. Please don't try to steal kiditty's topic, start your own.

It was not my intention to steal the topic. I just came from the topic on the same subject and thought about continuing.

And I am offended that you are being treated like a thief.
It is sad and uncomfortable to receive such a message from a veteran of the group.

It's common Internet terminology. Taking over someone else's thread in a forum is called threadjacking or thread-stealing and is very bad netiquette and manners. It's like cutting in front of somebody else in a line. And as I pointed out it's against the forum rules here. If you had read and followed those we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

@JayM And let this be the end of the conversation.

@edugsdf I am sure JayM did not intend to suggest you are a thief. Please do open another topic with your hardware issue issue
