Dedoimedo has a review that's rather negative.
but I have to agree about gray on gray text. Everything is moving to that.

thanks - in the middle of 4 different projects so just scanned parts of it for now until later but it sounds like it went backwards which some stuff seemes to do.

"Redacted", thanks for the link. It had good comparisons between VLC 3.x and 4.0. The following quote from that review (by Igor Ljubuncic) https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/vlc-4-preview.html (19 February 2021) pretty much sums up what he thinks about the new version (his emphasis):

Even without going into specifics, the fact it is touch-inspired tells you everything you need to know. There are ZERO cases where a desktop program was made better by using anything from the mobile world. ZERO.

not adding more to the devs workload - but if it is pretty bad maybe there is a way of keeping the older version in use and still functioning despite the progree in MX. If that makes any sense. i use vlc daily.

I'm trying very hard to understand more modern approaches to computing. I don't want to be a stick-in-the-mud when it comes to things that may be purely aesthetic or subjective.
But his points are not about those minor things.
My 2 major gripes that he mentions: The inefficiency of modern mobile design on desktop (3 clicks instead of 1) and gray-on-gray text.
All of my friends complain constantly how they can't read these new web pages. And I'm sure my little circle of friends can be extrapolated to thousands across the world.
But hey, we won't be around that much longer. I just hope the folks designing these things keep their eyes in good shape

70 here so i know what you mean and 4 eyes too. (glasses) and many ops too. the xfce website is harder to see and a number of others. the xfce is hard to se the membres names as such and i am still not that bad. geez - know what you mean.

Even with perfect eyesight gray on gray makes no sense.
