Ideas/opinions on Hypnotix (now on LinuxMint 20.1)

#1 Post by danielson »

Took LinuxMint Cinnamon 20.1 out for a spin the other day.
Was mostly curious about speed boosts and especially about that Hypnotix app. to view various tv stations throughout the world (never heard of before).
Thinking about friends who unsubscribed from cable tv and how this could be handy for them.
Would like to see installed on MX KDE someday...
It is apparently a work "under construction" by LinuxMint team.
So, hopefully they'll get the thing better sorted out 'cause the vast amount of stations and places to look for is rather overwhelming.
Anyone here seen it yet?

I have been keeping my eye on it, waiting for some issues to get ironed out.

But...

You’ll be happy to know that at least the dependencies that I know of have already been packaged for MX in preparation for this to be available for users.. One was just added to the repos a day ago. ;)

I am running MX Linux 19.3 with the Cinnamon DE added on from the MX Package Installer. (I prefer the Cinnamon Desktop over XFCE.) I went to Github the other day and downloaded and installed the Debian package for Hypnotix. It works just fine on MX with Cinnamon. Sure, it needs some refining, and has some glitches, but it's an excellent app. I had no issues with dependencies. The Debian Package Installer took care of that as needed.

Thanks for sharing your experience, very good to know.

It works the same on MX with Xfce, but I wouldn’t call it “fine” just yet. There are still some issues that need fixed before I’d like to submit it to the MX test repo and officially start maintaining it for MX users.
Remember even though it’s our “test” repo, we do our best to make sure the applications are 99% stable and functional 99% of the time.

:crossfingers: That that will be soon.

Understandable, SwampRabbit. A little side note... I'd like to see an official release of MX Cinnamon one day.

Cinnamon is ok, clean and functional, but isn’t my cup of team. I know Stevo has spent a lot of time getting on Cinnamon packages to where they are for MX. But I don’t believe there is enough interested to have an “official” release with it, or enough people to support it on top of all the stuff supported already.

Anyone can create an unofficial Respin, I think there was one, not sure if the creator still is working on it or not.

Unless there is a dev that is actually interested in Cinnamon and has the time, that's very unlikely.

A note, back on topic, the newer IMDb dependency for Hypnotix is in the MX Test Repo for those wanting to play with it before we official package it.

@SwampRabbit - this is good news! Hope to test it out today sometime.

Now, if someone is aware of a tentative "tv guide" for Hypnotix...
