Cinnamon Desktop on MX Linux

#1 Post by OoglaBoogla »

Myself, I prefer the Cinnamon Desktop, so I installed it on MX Linux 19.3. I used the XFCE Desktop for a while, but there are a lot of things I don't like about it. Things I just couldn't find a satisfactory solution for, so I left it behind. Yes, there are a few issues with using the Cinnamon DE on MX linux, but I've had no problem finding solutions for them. One of them would be a major issue to many Linux users. I'm using Cinnamon 4.2.4-2 from the MX Test Repo. Installing this does not install a terminal for Cinnamon, and for some odd reason, the XFCE terminal doesn't work in Cinnamon. So I installed the plain-jane Gnome Terminal from the Popular Applications tab in the MX Package Installer. It seems to work fine in Cinnamon, so I set it as my default terminal. Now, HTOP and other terminal apps are working in Cinnamon. I'm sure other terminals of your choice will work fine as well. Just not XFCE.

So far as I know, cinnamon uses gnome-terminal as their standard.
FWIW: Almost every terminal should work with any DE (whether you like them or not being another issue).

Why not just run Linux Mint Debian edition 4 and be done with it ? It's as close as you can possibly be to MX and it's all rigged out to the max.Clem-mint and the MX boys are buddies. You could likely do a few PM's for some debs of MX tools of various types and toss them on LMDE although it has some nice tools too out of the box

Some of us are here exactly because Mint and LMDE have their own annoying problems. I'd give the OP the opposite advice - stay on MX, use Cinnamon if you like it better than XFCE. The MX base system is probably going to run better for you than anything by Mint, regardless of which desktop you choose.
