Need help to install KDE on usb wired SSD [Solved] [Solved]
Re: Need help to install KDE on usb wired SSD [Solved]
Just tested on a friends' old HP Pavilion laptop, Intel iCore3, usb2 (i presume), Win7 with 4Gs of RAM:
Boot speed pretty well at par with the DELL desktop i'm presently using - but so much faster than her Win7!
RAM usage at about 1.3G (same as DELL).
Vivaldi had no issues accessing the web.
Pretty good so far hé?!

Thanks for confirming that it boots in BIOS mode in addition to UEFi mode.
It's probably also an USB-3 port, otherwise the load time would be longer, I assume.

Re: Need help to install KDE on usb wired SSD [Solved]
Probably right.
The laptop is about 10 years old.
Didn't know usb3 was out at that time.
msinfo command didn't work to find all the particulars.
At least i(we) know MX KDE on standalone SSD works!
It's a longer process but complications are avoided.

Good that it went the way you intended to set up...

"new toy"... true and ah ha ha ahaa! ...and you took it to "her"! ... and it's "wired" not "wireless"fehlix wrote: Fri Dec 04, 2020 12:05 pm Good. Would you mind to also boot the external SSD-USB on another PC, preferable in the other UEFI or BIOS-mode, to check that you can boot in either UEFI or BIOS modes, with your new toy.

My friends HP has:
4 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, 4th port shared with eSATA
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02029513
So, even on usb2, this SSD with MX KDE connected via usb, still excels!

Think i missed the punch line to agnivo007's last post.

That's good info. Actually for eSata I would use an SSD-enclosure with an eSata port, if those are still available on the marked, so you external drive would really fly as an internal one.danielson wrote: Sat Dec 05, 2020 4:27 pm My friends HP has:

It's fascinating to see how old computers can be rejuvenated thanks to Linux.
With most people using them just to surf, email and Skype (or other similar service) -refurbishing in this economical way should never be discarded.

^^ True, I really believe in the go-green initiative-reduce,reuse,re-purpose,recycle.
Haven't bought a new computer or laptop for years, currently use certified refurbished ones.
Oh, regarding the last post, it was just some fun made after your project was successful.
You said it's a "wired" ssd (I said, never seen a wireless), and you took it to a friend "her", fehlix congratulated you for a "new toy".
To sum it up, you took a "wired new toy to her". Fill up the blanks yourself: Wired (S)uper (S)wanky (D)---o
Sorry if you don't like, it was some adult fun, I'm 30+

@agnivo007 - did acquire two refurbished desktops with Win7 a few years back and they are doing just fine so far.
More "recent" models such as that laptop for that "friend" has many useful functions and it would be good to do an extensive test with MX KDE on it someday.
Maybe when it starts having too many quirks.

Kind of guessed that the toy business you were alluding to, had nothing to do with the Hasbro kind.
