Tracker - gnome file indexing and search tool for Linux

#1 Post by Buck Fankers »

I found tracker: "tracker-store: database indexer and query daemon" in my: Session and Startup - Application Autostart (I have Xfce)
"Tracker is a file indexing and search tool for Linux. Gnome makes use of it for some of its functionality, and as a result, Tracker is installed by default on quite a few Linux distributions."
I'm just curious, does it comes standard with MX Xfce or did I get is at some point with some app...
Do I need to keep this, since I'm not using Gnome?
I checked MXPI and I do not have installed any of these three:

- tracker
- tracker-extract
- tracker-miner-fs

Or anything else with the tracker in the name. I don't recall seeing it last time, few months ago, when looking at Session and Startup. I think, bad memory lol

So, does this need to be on Xfce?
Is there an easy way to see which app uses this?

I can answer one of your questions: I don't have this in my system (and I have Xfce plus I installed KDE) so it apparently came with something you installed.

Check to see what Gnome apps you've installed including Nautilus, plus any file search tools you may have added. Don't just remove packages with gnome in their names willy-nilly though as some of them are needed by MX (due in part to GTK3, I think.) You could also look at /var/log/apt/history.log to see what you've installed vs. what was installed via upgrades, or right-click on the updater icon and click History for an easier-to-read version.

(And thanks. I'll be checking Joshua's status again in a few hours.)

I have the same issue, and tracked it down to Foliate. John Factotum, the author says that Tracker isn't required (https://github.com/johnfactotum/foliate/issues/361), but the MX package has it as a dependency. I don't really want Tracker running. If I remove Foliate and run the Flatpack version will that run without Tracker?
