Screen flicker on boot-up

#1 Post by driesdej »

Newbie again _ I have read here and there something concerning the “screen driver/resolution” when installing MX or antiX on old laptops. Unfortunately I dont get the whole picture yet.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500-1EL (32bit) with Intel Celeron cpu and an Acer Aspire V5-123 (64bit) with AMD cpu _ on both I get the same problem irespective of what Linux strain I install.
Booting from Live Memstick is fine, all works but when I install on the HDD and it reboots, and subsequent boots I get a screen flicker and actually see the bar filling up – and thats it. Eventually the bar is full, screen keeps flickering but nothing happens further.
Is there a way I can boot into Terminal to load a screen driver? What about the wifi to conect. How do I get that going in terminal?
I hope I have asked the right Q’s at the right place

The best is Menu => MX Tools => Quick System Info (see my signature below) for both machines. (You can do that on live-session for both).

(I guess you have the graphic cards: Intel for Toshiba and Amd for Acer. Probably you'll try some boot codes - we'll tell - according to your post)

Also you can hit the esc key and see the boot process (behind the "bar" aka splash screen) and where it gets stuck ...
