I think the original poster will find this https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian ... nkenDebian link titled "Advice For New Users On Not Breaking Their Debian System" useful (JayM has the link in his signature (in Post #2)) in regards to installing software in Debian systems.driesdej wrote: Sat Aug 15, 2020 6:46 am Could someone just answer my first question What if i need to use an outside repository ???????
Install from a Repository

That's it .asqwerth wrote: Sat Aug 15, 2020 10:05 am Perhaps the OP could start a different thread asking for recommendations for applications that do what he wanted gnome-blog to do. He can describe what tasks he needs the application to carry out.
With this thread's title, the people who may know the answers might not be reading this.
Re: Install from a Repository
So a better thread title could be "Linux alternative for Win Live Writer?"
So, Windows Live Writer from MS was discontinued years ago, but some MS employees carried on another couple years with an open-sourced Open Live Writer before that died, too. I tried to run their last .exe in Wine-staging, but that was a no-go.
Most of the alternatives in alternatives.to for Live Writer are also Win or Mac only, discontinued, or both. Using Synaptic to search for blog, blogger, or wordpress seems a better tactic.
Drivel is recommended as an alternative for gnome-blog, and is in Raspian 10, based on Buster. We could try forwardporting the last Debian version, and hope the blog site APIs haven't changed in seven years...
In the repos already is qtm, and that's not abandoned, and I may try updating it to the current release. Try qtm first to see if that works OK for you, either with MX Package Installer or on the command line:

Code: Select all
sudo apt install qtm
Description: Web-log interface program
QTM is a desktop application for interacting with blogging and other content
management systems. It is presently compatible with Wordpress, Movable Type,
Drupal and Textpattern (but not with Blogger).

Doesn't or didn't Mozilla have one? if I recall there are quite a few applications that are what the OP is looking for... but I'm not a web guy

Re: Install from a Repository
I know nothing about weblog software. That said, there is an article entitled "Top 5 Best Blogging Software for Linux in 2020". The first on the list is WordPress, which is in the Stable Repo of the MX Package Installer. The version there is 5.0.10 while the latest version direct from WordPress is 5.5. If WordPress does the job you want you can put in a request here for the current version to be packaged to the MX Test Repo.
The other software mentioned is Drupal, Joomla, Movable Type, and Textpattern. Honorable mention were Tumbleweed, B2evolution, and Blosxom. I don't know if any of these are free or open source.
Oh! I just found a better article entitled "8 of the Best Free Linux Blog Software". This lists most of the same software, but it provides links (to pages on the same website) that details the features of each program.

I think you understand that installing software is handled differently in Linux in general and with Debian compatible systems, like MX.
There will be some trial and error on your part and some patience as you look for software that may or may not already be setup to work with your chosen distribution. You got some good advice already.
The main things are to learn to use the tools provided (in this case MX Package Installer or the apt tools) and ask for software packages that you need to use but are not yet in the repositories as a package. Many times just asking for a particular package to be added results in several alternatives to consider. Or, if the packagers can add your requested package they usually will. If they can't, for some technical reason, they will tell you why and point you toward an alternative. At least that's the way is happens here, in MX. The same cannot always be said for other distributions.
Second, I will parrot the advice above about starting a new topic with a new title that more closely matches your need for an offline blog editor that works with WordPress. Many MX users may miss your question about the blog software in this topic, which is about installing from a repository.
Welcome to MX. I am also an old Windows user and I had to go through the same learning curve. You'll like what MX offers us users.

Re: Install from a Repository
This may further muddy the waters, but many packages are being released also in distro-agnostic versions such as AppImages, Flatpaks, and snaps. But I think the native repo versions are still best if they are in there--the new formats usually take up many times more disk space, and may not respect your desktop themes.
Re: Install from a Repository
all info is much appreciated. Me greatest shorcomming is not knowing how to use the tools - "The main things are to learn to use the tools provided (in this case MX Package Installer or the apt tools) and ask for software packages that you need to use but are not yet in the repositories as a package" Thanks, you hit the nail on the head.
Maybe i also dont know where to find clear instructions on using the tools. The Manual is not always indeapth training. (and i could be wrong on that aswell)
I find, even asking "idiot" questions, to the frustration of many, i get to learn what others have forgotten already.

Re: Install from a Repository
Most of the MX GUI tools have help buttons which give a wealth of information about using the particular tool. Regarding how to request packages:
To request new or updated software packages be added to the MX Repositories, please read these instructions first, then post your request in the appropriate Package Requests/Status subforum for your version of MX: 19, 17/18 or 15/16.
Please read the Forum Rules, How To Ask For Help, How to Break Your System and Don't Break Debian. Always include your full Quick System Info (QSI) with each and every new help request.
