Quick system info

#1 Post by MAYBL8 »

This isn't a completely thought out idea but how about having a Quick system info topic where everyone could load their Quick system info to and then have a link to it added in their signature so people helping could just click on the link in their signature and see their info? I'm not sure how you handle people with more than one system but just an idea.

This was recommended before and it won't work for those that have more than one computer device like I, (Desktop) (Laptop).
I am command line illiterate. I copy & paste to the terminal. Liars, Wiseguys, Trolls, and those without manners will be added to my ignore list.

I think the problem with this is more than just the amount of systems, its also that the QSI provides the configuration info of the system.

We have folks who go from MX-18, to MX-19, to AHS, then back to MX-18; installed 42 different kernels, install Nvidia drivers 9 different ways... all within the same support thread.

But this does bring up a good area for improvement.

I wonder if a section could be created under the User Profile?

GamingOnLinux does this and that is how they track who uses what as part of their monthly stats.

Also many times it's important that the QSI is "freshly" taken..

"What's the situation "right now" ? "... Say, how full is the partition (home or root) ... or .. memory .. Does xxx driver look installed or not and can it be the reason of the issue.. etc.

So "Fresh QSI" is important , but not only the hardware & specs ..

Something like this: Your photo is required for something (passport etc.) and you bring a picture of you taken when you were 15 .. Yes, that was you, but no one else, but ... :D

If we got in the habit of telling/reminding users to update their QSI in their profile that could reduce that...

But yes in big complex threads where it changes a dozen times that could be an issue, also users not doing it could be an issue.

I was thinking it would save post space by just linking the QSI in the profile, might cut down on users not following instructions and posting QSI as normal text too.

I'll ask if there is a possibility to even have a section of the profile like that.

Easily solved, same exact method as Attachments uses currently.

+1 for this.

I was thinking about suggesting this just the other day. The ‘help text’ around the site would need to be changed, especially adding an update you QSI before posting, or possibly even better make that part of the post process.

If you want to get fancy, then add revisions (5?, 50?, unlimited?[1]) as well to each ‘system’ on ‘file.’

Even better:
  • Include an auto-parser from the QSI data, so they just paste and go. [2]
  • Add an auto-footer field (like signature) with links to each system the person has.
My goal for anything like this is to make it as easy as possible for everyone involved.

Best,
Michael

[1] Disk space is so cheap now days, probably easiest to go unlimited with a once a month background pruner:
  • Keep, per system, 5 newest QSIs posted
  • Remove all other QSIs > 1 year old
[2] Initial guess at bits to use for an auto-parser:

Code: Select all

Desktop Mobo: ASRock model: X470 Taichi
model: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
Basically things that won’t change, or if changed, make it a whole new system. With the above all QSIs posted get added to the ‘system’ named: “ASRock, X470 Taichi, AMD Ryzen 7 2700X”

PS: [ list] is broken? Operator error...

Its been discussed on the dev side, the issue is time and people to implement, maintain, and support.

In order to do more cool fancy and possibly easier things... we need volunteers to offer time and resources.

[ list] doesn't seem broken, I use it all the time here.

List works.. Just the ordered list isn't simple like that one.. You need to do it yourself adding =1 =2 etc..

( Sorry Admins, I know this is off-topic, just by the way for those who wonder how to: https://www.phpbb.com/community/help/bbcode )

Yeah sorry about the hijack
  • list one
    list two
Preview I'm seeing only one dot.

Huh, okay, I'm broken ;) [ list] goes around each item, not the group... (had to quote your list to see it)

Probably need to delete all these...
