I think you are right Stevo. I did some reading and it appears that Kodi needs at least openGL 2.0 for hardware decoding. I think my Intel 915 Graphics only supports openGL 1.4. Maybe Kodi 18.5 won't run with less than openGL 2.0.

I used to use a command line entry to force Kodi to use my graphics card. I haven't done that in awhile. Maybe 18.5 still supports it. I don't know. I'll see what I find out on the Kodi forum.

I'm not even sure what openGL is. But I think I can get it to at least 2.0 with an AGP graphics card.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. I'll read up on it.

Oh, and now I see that openGL is not so much determined by the distro but by the graphics hardware and the drivers for that hardware. There's a lot I don't know about this subject. But I'm learning.

Debian has, after more than two years, updated their Kodi build to 18.5 upstream, and we're getting back in sync with them instead of deb-multimedia.

If you already have updated to the earlier version of Kodi 18.5 in the MX 19 test repo, you must search for all installed packages of that build in MX package installer or Synaptic (or via your magical mystical terminal commands for you CLI wizards-- "kodius purgius") and remove them. Then you can safely upgrade to the new build in the test repo.

If I ever manage to get the Debian version backported for MX 17/18, the same will hold true. For now, the deb-multimedia port will remain in the testrepo for that distrelease.

Realized I hadn't sent up the 32-bit MX 19 packages, so that's corrected.

Yes, the newer version from Debian has the "dfsg" in the version to show things have been removed to meet Debian Free Software Guidelines.

Hopefully this is the right thread!

This is what happens when I upgrade from the already installed version:

Code: Select all

kodi (version 2:18.5-0.1~mx19+1) will be upgraded to version 2:18.5+dfsg1-1~mx19+1
kodi-bin (version 2:18.5-0.1~mx19+1) will be upgraded to version 2:18.5+dfsg1-1~mx19+1
kodi-data (version 2:18.5-0.1~mx19+1) will be upgraded to version 2:18.5+dfsg1-1~mx19+1
kodi-repository-kodi (version 2:18.5+dfsg1-1~mx19+1) will be installed
kodi-x11 (version 2:18.5+dfsg1-1~mx19+1) will be installed
libjs-iscroll (version 5.2.0+dfsg1-1) will be installed
python-pycryptodome (version 3.6.1-2+b1) will be installed

Upgrading breaks stuff, so don't do that ;) Installing clean installs fine.

Putting the backup over it (.kodi) has the text not present. Only images. Weird. So I wager you need to install completely clean.

Ah.. I was working on the settings / skin / interface, and put the fonts on arial based, WHAP all text instantly gone. Got them back thank goodness by guessing correctly. Leave that on skin default. ;)

Soooooo could be that the above (only images) can be fixed by going into the interface section, skin, and selecting "skin default".

To add as well.. seems the subtitle function is broken in this one, in Settings / Player / Language the "font to use for text subtitles" is grayed out (in the image here. It shows there, but not in my screen).
Also made sure in the calibration settings to pull the subtitles bar way up but still not displaying, so I am thinking the cause is in that font there. I used to be able to select arial so it looks like that support is not there for whatever reason, making it not display at all.

I think the two arial issues are related.

Kinda annoying since I need subtitles ;)

Changing the skin and setting a different font in there does not sort the "font to use for text subtitles" issue.

Hrmph. Seems I am going back to the 17.6 version of Kodi, the new 18.5 is not doing it for me.

edit: just went back to 17.6, and checked the thing first thing, and it is not grayed out for me there. Obviously something wrong with the new 18.5 kodi.
Can the old one be put back?

The latest "mx19+2" update in the test repo should restore the subtitles. Let me know if it doesn't! I'd like to get it into MX 19 main in time for the MX 19.1 release.

Do I have 24hrs still to get it tested and all? (it is 11pm here now). Should be having it all tested sometime in the afternoon of my timezone, something like 10am EST or something.

MX 19.1 final release is still some undetermined time away--we don't even have the beta out yet, so take your time.
