[Solved] Broken xfce4-goodies Package

#1 Post by rfinco »

Hello,

I just installed MX-Linux 19 64bit, and couldn't install xfce4-goodies using either MX Package Installer or Synaptic, because of broken packages.

Here's the error message from MX Package Installer:

requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The xfce4-mailwatch-plugin & xfce4-notes-plugin packages depend on version <4.13 of xfce4-panel but 4.14 is installed.

Looks like MX needs to package newer versions of those, perhaps.

For some reason if you hit fix broken packages, back out and install anew it still works somehow.. it went through for me like that twice on betas.. only a number end up in autoremovable, not really desirable.

In any case you can also install what is in there manually:

libqrencode4
libtagc0
mousepad
ristretto
thunar-media-tags-plugin
xfce4-clipman
xfce4-clipman-plugin
xfce4-dict

Those got marked before it crapped out, I just installed them one by one and no issues on them so far, and also none in autoremovable.

Thank you for the report.
xfce4-goodies is from the debian repos.
We have an updated Xfce4 in MX-19, for which those 2 plugins were not updated.
I'll build an xfce4-goodies package to override debian's.

A fixed xfce4-goodies package (4.14-0mx19) has been uploaded to the Main repository. Once your chosen mirror has updated, xfce4-goodies will be installable.

Thanks Tim, been struggling with that one since the betas I think. Even reported it myself earlier but it got washed over I guess.

I see a 4.14.0mx19 one now, installed fine. Of course it went quick, the packages in there were already on my system.

@timkb4cq: That fixed it!

I just did a repository refresh with "$ sudo apt update" in a terminal session, used MX Package Installer to install "xfce4-goodies", and everything installed OK.

Thank you very much for the help.

Although this is an old thread, I found it while searching for "mousepad" the simple XFCE text editor. For those who just want a simple text editor along side of the included featherpad, or instead of it, you can get it by installing just mousepad, without installing the collection of things included with xfce4-goodies that you may never use. Personally, I much prefer mousepad to featherpad for simple gui text editing.

Likewise, xfce4-goodies includes the image viewer ristretto. In my opinion, the LXDE image viewer gpicview is both smaller and friendlier than ristretto, and gpicview can be installed by itself also.

Finally, although not related to xfce4-goodies, I use evince, the "Gnome Document Viewer" for PDFs over the default MX PDF viewer qpdfview. Although evince has a few dependencies, they are tiny and installing evince and its dependencies only come to about 19 mb.

There is nothing wrong with the default MX accessories for these things. In fact, MX is so satisfactory out-of-the-box, I tend to feel a little guilty for tailoring it to my tastes. I might be wrong. People just develop their own preferences for applications and those are mine.

Who comes up with these names anyway? ristretto, gpicview, evince -- if we had to rely on the program names, how would people ever find them?
