I don't know much about systemd or sysVinit, but what there is to gain by going the systemd route? Isn't what most other distros have done already? Why choose MX then? If MX has gained much popularity in the last years, isn't this one of the reasons? I mean, if MX becomes systemd only, it would easily become 'just another systemd distro', as if there weren't enough already. I understand that there can be technical difficulties, but tu put it bluntly, my opinion is that the dilemma for MX is not systemd vs something else, it's something else vs disappearance. I doubt anybody would stick to MX for long if it was full systemd, why not Ubuntu/Arch/Centos then.

Because it's based on Debian stable but offers a huge range of backported software and a whole suite of user-friendly GUI tools to help manage the system.

MX is awesome! :number1:

The timedatectl(1) command is part of systemd so that's not surprising.
But it works with MX-18 without booting with systemd.

Head_on_a_Stick wrote: Tue May 21, 2019 12:43 pm This would have worked:

Code: Select all

# hwclock --systohc --localtime
Or just change the last line in /etc/adjtime from UTC to LOCAL.
Thanks! I may try that out the next time I test Devuan again.

Head_on_a_Stick wrote: Tue May 21, 2019 12:43 pm But note the warning in the man page:
man timedatectl wrote:maintaining the RTC in the local timezone is not fully supported and will create various problems with time zone changes and daylight saving adjustments. If at all possible, keep the RTC in UTC mode.
I have to use local time because the date/time stamps on the media files from my DSLR, dashcam, GoPro, etc. get messed up badly when my Linux machine is on UTC.

MX includes the systemd package but Devuan does not.

The timedatectl(1) command would not have worked in antiX either.

Head_on_a_Stick wrote: Tue May 21, 2019 12:23 pm The current release version of Devuan is ASCII, based on stretch, but their development branches are beowulf & ceres, which are based on buster & sid.
I was running beowulf briefly and it works very well indeed, they have now removed libsystemd0 and the Debian developers have adopted their version of elogind:
https://packages.debian.org/buster/elogind
Thank you Head_on_a_Stick, I think you solved this tread. To confirm what you wrote, I installed Devuan ASCII (stretch). Installed Gnome using elogind, and works very well. Both Xfce and Gnome in same install. Next, upgraded to Beawulf (buster) which upgraded smoothly, and works well.

IMHO, elogind is the solution by learning from Devuan. MX will remain as it was created in first place without becoming a systemd only..

I will create one new tread, to discuss the solution.

This!
Most users have not even heard of systemd, if they have, they don't know what it is. Maybe a few users are here because of sysVinit, but not the majority. Old guys like me were here before systemd was ever thought of.
Speaking for myself, this is the best Linux community/forum on the Internet. Lots of great people here and smart guys creating a great distro. It was not one or two things that made MX excellent, but lots of things making the perfect recipe for an awesome distro.
