Version 17.01.03 per mx-compton_17.01.03_amd64.deb just added here. Popup notes 'An older version is available in a software channel...etc' which corresponds to the custom *deb now available, thanks DO.
On first glance, not ticking 'Launch Compton at Login' offers a nice test run until I logout (reboot in practice mostly here so test and forget until I choose to use again).
Right off I have noticed the hplip panel icon lost the odd look (bottom and right borders incorrectly showing black instead of being transparent as with other sides).
Also, my custom xfce compositing effects are gone so obviously, testing blurry transparent window effects and such requires me to begin a new 'theme' as it were, with various options to experiment with. After 2,500km and two 12h ferry crossings this week, it works good for me and seems quite logical and intuitive to use.
Edit: I would like to fade windows out since it is a nice effect, yet have selected windows simply appear immediately, but not sure the effects can be separated as such yet in my tinkering.
Notes: simply had to re-enable compositing checkbox (Windows Manager Tweaks-Compositor tab) to resume previous xfce settings after restarting machine, but admittedly, custom settings had been reset, which is a 20 second job to reinstate.
