Migration document

#1 Post by Gaer Boy »

Still confined to the netbook, which I use rarely. The original install is 14.2, updated in Oct 14 and then a number of times this month. Otherwise a stock installation, apart from removing xscreensaver.

I decided to follow the migration path. It took a while to find the migration doc - did I miss a clear signpost?

Upgraded 14.2 to 14.3 no problem. All OK on the upgrade from 14.3 to 14.4 until the final step, where the step-by-step could be modified:

Replace logout icon

Right-click the logout icon > Properties > Edit
Click on the icon, and navigate to /usr/share/icons/Faenza-Cupertino-mini/actions/32/
Highlight lxde-logout.png and click OK, then exit.

Thanks, I will look at that.

Depends on your definition of "clear," I guess. There is a link in the Site Announcements box at the top of the first page to migration info, and another one on the home page of MX Linux. Maybe more should have been done, but time pressure was great during the last few days around the release, and the migration page alone demanded more than 5 hours of work. And still had problems.

I didn't look until I read that there was one. (how-to on migration that is)

I have to admit, I had a hard time finding it. Maybe highlight it with that wild and crazy color...
The new point release MX-14.4 is now available from the download page. Feedback here, bugs and feature requests here, migration info here.
Have you checked out the new MX Users Manual?
Mepis 12 Beta 2 (11.9.92) is still available here, comment thread here

The only reason I noticed the migration info was because I read this thread.... totally missed it when I logged in.
Thankfully upgraded to 14.4 without incident by following the provided info.

Being of advanced years and getting doddery, I missed the migration information completely. However, with a spare partition or two
available, 14.4 was installed, no problems. Somewhere in the process, I was locked out of the previous version. All back to normal now
and should I live long enough, will hope to see how to migrate next time.

These old eyes would have seen a red or purple somewhat easier. But if you have a lot of extra stuff installed the written directions and/or D.O.'s video work fine.

I will change that.

Thanks, Jerry - the answer is 'Yes, more than one.' I missed the link on the Board Index because it appeared on a line of its own with my screen settings - entirely my fault. I missed the one on the MX home page because the netbook has a very shallow display and I didn't scroll right to the bottom.

Anyway, the new highlight on the Board Index means there's no excuse for anyone else!

The upgraded system is fine - I like most of the visual changes, although I've reverted to Zukito Dark which I find clearer.
