Symbols dont enlarge with panel with particular Papirus Themes

#1 Post by debianix »

Hello!

as addition to my panel at the bottom I created an empty panel at the left side of the screen which disappears automatically and contains a few mini programs that I need often, so something like a dock alternative, which I like a lot for my workflow.

I now see that with Breeze Symbol theme, those icons get bigger as I increase the size of the panel in edit mode. Now, sincd I decided to use the Papirus Icon/Symbol package, the symbols stay in one size, no matter how wide I adjust the panel to be. Do u know if there is a chance to fix that and get the symbols bigger?

I also observed the following behaviour:
When I use the pre-installed "Papirus Dark" theme, the icons are normal size and also get bigger when the panel gets bigger.
With the preinstalled mxblue-dark papirus theme, the icons do not get bigger.
I now have several Papirus variants to choose from, and it currently looks as if the behaviour that the icons do not enlarge according to the panel width, only occurs with those Papirus themes that use the other folder icon.
(You can choose between the folder icon with a "sheet of paper", i.e. a white line, and the other folder icon design, which is relatively "monochrome" without white. Personally, I prefer the folder icon without "paper" in it ;) )
So both with the pre-installed themes and with the self-made themes there seem to be variants that work and some that don't work. And the ones with the folder icon without paper don't work for enlarging the icons in the panel.
Can anyone explain this? Is there anything that can be done about this behavior other than accepting the folder icons with paper in them? :-)

When you select the icon theme Papirus-mxblue-darkfolder, is it just the folder icons which don't resize with the panel or is it all icons (ie. also app icons) which do not resize?

I suspect it's something to do with the papirus icon themes with "classic" folders (the one's with no paper) only having the icons in one "scalable" size, which is not being scaled.
The papirus icon themes with "modern" folders (the one's with paper) have icons in a variety of sizes.

That is probably it. The classic folders were taken from the old papirus folder design from around 2016-2017.

You will probably need to keep to the base Papirus theme to get enlarging icons. I prefer the look of the old folders, but they weren't developed further unfortunately.

@Melber: all icons are affected!
Wow! You guys are really brilliant! I experimented a bit and finally decided to give the new folder symbols "with piece of paper" a chance. I used the Papirus Folder Colors package and the KColorChooser to create a folder color that is relatively close to the classic beige-yellowish folder colors as we know them from Windows etc. in the past. However, I made it a little darker for my sensitive eyes and am now really happy with it. With this color, the white paper inside doesnt bother me at all anymore. It even fits in surprisingly well with the dark Breeze theme. But that's all a matter of taste anyway.
Thank you so much for your help, you've saved me again!

@debianix

First: happy to hear the papirus folder colors app provided a viable alternative.

Second: I had a bit of a fiddle and think the culprit with papirus-mxblue is not the icons themselves, but rather the index.theme config file.
The PanelDefault value in seems to act as a maximum size for panel icons.

Open the file /usr/share/icons/Papirus-mxblue/index.theme and edit the line

Code: Select all

PanelDefault=32
to

Code: Select all

PanelDefault=64
then apply the papirus-mxblue icon theme. The Papirus-mxblue panel icons should then resize up to 64px size instead of 32 px.

Well thanks a lot for ur answer, I will test that.
Does what you described also apply to other papirus symbol themes with those „old“ folder symbol type?
I ask because I dont really like the brown color in the folder symbols of the mxblue symbol theme theme ..

If Melber's advice works, you can use the Papirus Folder Colour tool to create a folder in the Classic style with any colour you want, including changing the colour of the brown tab in the folder. The tool allows you to create new folder colours in both the current and classic folder styles.

Finally I tried Melber's advice: It works perfectly.
Funnily enough, I have become friends with the self-made Papirus folder color theme and the "new" folder icons of the Papirus theme. I'll just stick with that now. Nevertheless, it is very good to know (maybe also for others who have the similar problem) that it works just as well with the "old" Papirus folder icons if you know where to tweak :-) Thanks Melber and thanks asqwerth!
