MX23.1 KDE Brother-printer "no pages found"

#1 Post by berlin59 »

My old Brother DCP-165C doesn't print anymore after update. Scanning works fine.
This happens in both SysVinit and Systemd environments.

The print-symbol appears for a second in the task-line, then it disappears.
The printer-queue says "no pages found".

I tested all USB-ports. All failed.

Then I tested MX 23.1 Xfce : It prints without problems.
I tested Win10: It prints without problems
I tested Sparky KDE (based on Debian12 too): same failure to print after the lastest update, scanner works

My search in Google for such a failure was fruitless. Some talk about defining a IP in the Printer and then somehow manage to find a way in the fritz-box to define it, but I have no idea how to do this. There must be a better solution because in Xfce it works without such special "solutions".

Have you tried recreating the printer after the update?

Also, there is a brother printer driver in the MX Package Installer ( enabled repos ) which resolved a couple of problems that I was seeing.

Yes, I recreated the printer after the update.

I will try to find the brother printer driver in the MX Package Installer now.
Sorry, there is nothing there.
I installed gutenberg-printer-drivers, but that didn't help.

Now I installed the Xfce desktop with mx package installer, but still printing doesn't work.

Right now, my only option is to use KDE for everything except printing and to boot Xfce when I need to print something.

I will install an arch-based distro, KDE desktop and try to print from it.

Ok, I installed EndeavourOS Galileo KDE. Printing works, scanning works. Out of the box.
Why ?
I have no idea - except that in debian something is wrong. After the last update (before it worked on MX23.1 KDE, Sparky-KDE and Spiral-Linux-KDE .... all based
on Debian 12 bookworm).

I installed Sparky-KDE semi-rolling.
Printing and scanning works. Out of the box.

Looks like I am the only one with this problem in debian12 stable distros.
The brother printer/scanner DCP-165C is old. Has no WLAN, only connection to the PC is a USB-cable.

Right now I have no idea how to solve this problem.

Problem is solved now.
I installed MX23.2 KDE .
DCP-165C is printing and scanning as it should. Out of the box = installing the brother-files from

FWIW:
We have a brother installer helper script, which you can just run this way:

Code: Select all

./brother-installer-helper.sh DCP-165C
and would fetch all needed drivers for the printer and scanner,
in one step and perform the brother driver installation for that printer.
It may ask later to specify the printer-URI.
Which in case is yet unknown (to you) you can just enter a dummy ip like 172.0.0.2
But would create a valid "Printer" within the printer setup,
where you might just need to specify/correct the URI e.g IP or USB based:
Here example on Xfce:
brother-helper-installer.jpg
The printer driver script is available within this post:
Brother-Printer-Installer-Helper Script
Brother-Printer-Installer-Helper Script

viewtopic.php?p=447475#p447475

The script within that post receives regularly update, whenever Brother provides a newer installer.
And it is mentioned in MX Wiki Printer entry: Printer drivers - Brother
Note: The proprietary brother driver may not be needed for any not-to-old Printer/Scanner,
which does support driverless printing, available in MX-23x. ( and partially in MX-21)
