Do I need to do a reinstall??

Should I do another backup and leave out certain folders/files before doing the backup that could cause the current issue?

There is also another file: file:///home/mona/.config/kcm_touchpad.notifyrc
Content:
[Event/TouchpadDisabled]
Execute=
Logfile=
TTS=

[Event/TouchpadEnabled]
Execute=
Logfile=
TTS=

Maybe that has something to do with it???
Would like to get around a fresh install if possible..

I tried to delete the file:///home/mona/.config/kcminputrc with the root command - and after login it is there again - it always gets restored....

That is correct, it should recreate a default file with default entries. So something else is causing the issue.

Could you see if the problem occurs in a new user account that you have logged into? We have MX User Manager that makes creating a new user a snap. That way we can see if it's a system issue or limited to some setting in your preserved home.

The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Hello Stevo,

I did the Add User suggestion.

With the test user I added the trackpad and the mouse work normally side by side and the "trackpad disabled because a mouse was plugged in" error message didn't show up.

This error message gets shown in my home directory without the mouse being plugged in by the way..... and the trackpad gets simply disabled without there being the need for it....

With the standard driver that was installed on my MX21.3 system - I had the option to deactivate the trackpad, once the mouse was put in.

Since I got the recommendation to use the LIBINPUT driver for the trackpad I changed the drivers via MX tools as advised - but the libinput driver didn't have this option anymore - and I couldn't revert to the original driver - and the backup was made with that constellation.
Could that be the cause??

SO here is what I came up with to solve the issue.

I created another backup with just my files in the respective folders - excluding all other files.

Then I created a new user, deleted the files of the user account that wasn't working and restored the backup files I newly created.

Then I deleted the non-functional user account and have the "new" account now working the way it should - whereas the trackpad driver is not so great - or the trackpad on this Dell also has a functional issue - but in general it works decently.

Whatever configuration file messed up that user account - unfortunately this couldn't be found.

Thanks to all who gave input and tried to help. Especially the suggestion with the other user account shed some light onto the situation.
