MX 23 KDE - HP MFP Error: unsupported personality: UNKNOWN  [Solved]

#1 Post by srq2625 »

I have the HP LaserJet Pro MFP m227fdw installed on my LAN as a wireless device using a static IP address that is from a pool of addresses lower then the first address allocated by my DHCP server. My computer can "see" the printer; ping works and I can access the printer's web interface (see below).

I have had zero problems running this printer in the last two versions of MX (and before that I was able to download, compile, and install the drivers etc from the HP developer's portal).

Installed HP Printing facility from MX Package Installer :Popular Applications. This installs hplip 3.22.10+dfsg0-2

Attempting to print from any application using this version I get one line on the single sheet ejected from the printer, "Unsupported Personality: UNKNOWN"

Printer works with zero issues on the same computer running current version of Windows.

Accessing the configuration page of the printer (there's a web browser interface built into the printer at 192.168.xxx.xxx:631) it lists the following installed personalities:
  • PCL6
  • AirPrint
  • PCL
  • PDF
  • PS
I've attempted downloading from the HP Developer's Portal the most current version (3.23.5) but there are a number of dependencies not available in MX 23; among them the following (there are others of the python3-py*** variety but I lost the complete list)
  • sane-devel
  • libavahi-dev
  • policykit
  • python3-pyqt4-dbus
Please let me know if there is any other information I can supply that will make it easier/possible to diagnose and fix.

Try changing the printer properties in cups to use the hpcups driver instead of a pcl or ps.
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.

I'm sure this makes sense to many, I apologize as my skills/knowledge are not to the level that I can understand. Can you provide a bit more direction?

Many thanks.

Sorry, I was moving fast :-)

Instructions here are mx21, I dont have a 23KDE installed at this time, so might be a little different.

From the MX menu, open Printers
Click on your printer and then click on configure
The bottom drop down ( Driver ) click that drop down and then click on Select Custom Driver.

You will be looking for the hpcups driver.
Mine says HP (my printer) then pcl3, hpcups 3.18.12

Your driver should be a little different, and you should have multiple since you installed hplip , but you want the one that says hpcups.

I had to read your pose, search, re-read your post, search again, re-re-read your post and I FINALLY found it!

For those who might be interested....

Remember, this is 23KDE....
  1. System Settings
  2. Search for Printers
  3. Select your printer from the list on the left
  4. Click on the "Configure" button in the right-side panel
  5. The fourth option on the right is "Driver:" --> click on the down-arrow
  6. Click on "Select a Custom Driver"
  7. For my printer, the default driver is "LaserJet Pro MFP m27c, hpijs, 3.22.10(3n)"
  8. I selected the next one down "LaserJet Pro MFP m27c, hpcups, 3.22.10(3n)"
And, now it works!

Thanks so much CharlesV!!!

My wife runs 23Xfce (I don't know why, she just likes it better) and the tool I found in KDE does not exist in Xfce. So, I had to find another way to get it to work. And, with clues from CharlesV, some web searching, and my success above, I found the solution for her as well:
  1. In a browser, navigate to the URL --> http://localhost:631/admin
  2. Click on "Manager Printers"
  3. Click on your printer
  4. In the "Administration" dropdown, select "Modify Printer"
  5. Click "Continue"
  6. Again, click "Continue"
  7. Find the driver you need in the "Model" list. It's a long list and I never would have found what I was looking for without the clues mentioned above.
  8. When you've selected the desired driver, click on "Modify Printer". This will serve up a confirmation page.
  9. And now you're cooking with gas!
