BTW, trying to install Synaptic gives this error loop:

usually the lock happens because another apt-using program is already open. Question: is Discover or MXPI open? Is mx-updater open or in use? Maybe Discover is it's in the midst of refreshing package lists to check for updates? Repo Manager might also be apt-using.

[ADDED: forgot that by default mx-updater is also not installed in MX KDE 21]

I suggest you try installing the whole distro first. ONce it works, then carry out the installation of synaptic (and maybe mx-updater a.k.a apt-notifier) on the installed system.

I have installed a fresh copy of KDE MX21.
What next?
Thanks!

Synaptic just doesn't seem to work.

I got Synaptic to work for now, but the second drive still needs a password to be accessed.

What is on your second drive? Clearly you didn't install /home on it otherwise it would just mount normally as part of your system.

How did you format it, ie with what file system? Did you use Disk Manager to automount it? Did you go into MX Tweak ("Other" tab) and select the option to allow mounting by non-root user?

I suggest you start a new thread for your "2nd drive needs password access" issue. Include all the answers/information to the questions I raised above. There are better qualified people who can help with that issue so I won't post further on this thread since the captioned issue has been solved. Continuing with a new issue in this thread means it will be overlooked by various people who could help.

There are also by the way lots of similar threads on this issue about an additional partition requiring root password to be mounted.

So I had formatted the wrong drive, I formatted my USB stick :frown:
I can now mount the second drive, but need to do this everytime I restart. Is there an automount feature?

Found it, sorry.
