Error message on update & upgrade  [Solved]

#1 Post by AltTabDelete »

I am getting the following error after a suggested system update & upgrade:

Code: Select all

dpkg: error processing package linux-image-5.10.0-13-amd64 (--configure):
installed linux-image-5.10.0-13-amd64 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-amd64:
linux-image-amd64 depends on linux-image-5.10.0-13-amd64 (= 5.10.106-1); however:
Package linux-image-5.10.0-13-amd64 is not configured yet.
I have attempted:

Code: Select all

sudo apt --fix-missing update
sudo apt update

sudo dpkg --configure -a
These haven't worked and I'm getting out of my depth dealing with kernels. What should I be doing? TIA

Code: Select all

This might be relevant:

Yes, see what other kernels you have in /boot, you might want to remove some extra ones (make sure you don't remove the current one)

Code: Select all

ID-2: /boot raw-size: 512 MiB size: 487.2 MiB (95.16%)
 used: 431.7 MiB (88.6%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1 maj-min: 8:1

@Adrian - Thank you! That was exactly the problem; too many old kernels & configuration files cluttering up /boot & grub. Once removed, all is as it should be.

As an aside, am I remembering correctly that MX Linux used to purge unneeded kernels in the past? Or am I thinking of a former OS?

Wondering exactly what to delete.
@Adrian :

Here's an image of what I have in my (KDE) boot partition:

Not sure if this image actually inserted or works properly, so here's another try:
https://imgur.com/a/XEcPZf3

Basically, should I remove ALL files related to the old images?
e.g. "config", ".img", "system.map", and "vmlinuz" files?

Of course, keeping the latest one of all of those related files.

So, I'm asking what's the best practice/procedure here?

Thanks for any help (to all).

You don't remove them by hand just uninstall all the linux-images-5.10.0-*** except for the ones that you use (also the linux-headers related to those) use either Synaptic, PackageInstaller or apt from CLI.

If I understand correctly, you should keep your current linux-images and current linux-headers, the previous linux-images & linux-headers, plus any linux-images & linux-headers needed for special circumstances (eg, to run certain applications requiring an older kernel).

You can find your current kernel in CLI by:

Code: Select all

uname -r
I used Synaptic to search for linux-images & linux-headers and completely removed all but my current & last previous -images & -headers to purge the configuration files also.

Then I updated grub with:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Then rebooted.

Thanks again to both @Adrian, and @AltTabDelete ! :number1:

Looks like we have success: before following your instructions, my /boot folder had only 17.9MB free, and after uninstalling the old images and headers (via MX Package Installer, a.k.a MXPI, under the "Stable Repo" tab), I now have 107.2MB free, and, most importantly, at boot, my kernel/image is now running the latest, 5.10.0-13-amd64.

So...Kudos to both of you!!!

One remaining question: I see in my /boot folder that there still exists a couple of old images, that did NOT show-up on the Stable Repo MXPI list (neither un-greyed-out, nor greyed-out). These are: initrd.img-5.10.09-amd64, and, initrd.img-5.10.09-amd64.old.dkms

I'm assuming that since they were not in the package manager list to uninstall, that I should leave the alone.

I'm also assuming that my current 107.2MB of free space on /boot is sufficient.

Please let me know if all is OK with this, or if I should go to greater lengths to attempt an uninstall of those old images (the 5.10.09 ones).

Thanks again.

In my case, I removed both linux-image & linux-header 5.10.09 & configuration files; it hasn't seemed to affect my system at all. But, YMMV!
