Opera H.264 support missing

#1 Post by SIttner76 »

Hi
While Vivaldi and Firefox play all videos fine, in Opera I often get "format is not supported" notifications (and I tried with Hardware acceleration turned on and off). I checked on this page: https://tools.woolyss.com/html5-audio-video-tester/
I noticed that Opera differs from both other browsers in that it does not support the H.264 codec (see attachments).
This seems strange, given that H.264 is probably the most widely used format, and Opera even supports the much newer AV1 codec. How can I make Opera play H.264 videos?
Thank you for your help

Re: Opera H.264 support missing

#2 Post by SIttner76 »

I started this thread in the software section, but apparently it has been moved to the MX KDE section. I don't know why because this issue does not seem to be related to the KDE desktop environment...(?)
Anyway, to investigate this issue I tried installing Opera on various other Linux Live Isos based on either KDE or Gnome, and they all had H.264 support for Opera out of the box, so something strange seems to be going on here in MX.

Interesting, which one you tried and what version where involved.

I didn't make a note which versions of Opera, but they were freshly installed from the software center (as it was not preinstalled on the ISOs), so I guess the latest version. I tried e.g. the Ubuntu 22.04 daily build for Gnome and Manjaro 21.2.5 for KDE.

This is an issue since long ago
https://forums.opera.com/topic/34659/op ... e-codec/11

But there is a script that installs the codec, might be necessary to run it after an update.
https://gist.github.com/mcarletti/7989d ... f8ac54fe31

After running it the video test looks like this
Opera Snapshot_2022-03-26_203331_tools.woolyss.com.png
Hope this helps.

Thank you. Unfortunately my knowledge of running scripts is limited. I saved the linked text with a .sh ending, made the file executable and then executed it either by double-clicking it in Dolphin or by typing the name of the script in the terminal. Both just gave me error messages and did nothing. How do you properly run this script?
Anyway, I managed to do what is described in the script manually 9_9 and now Opera has proper H.264 support - thanks!

Hm, strange. I copied the raw text into a text editor, saved it, made it executable and run it without any error messaged. I'm not sure, but I think I ran it with sudo.
Anyhow, good that you also could solve it. :-)
