[solved] Nvidia version 526 is bugged

#1 Post by adr1an »

I've been distro-hopping for ages now. I've used archlinux and experienced an nvidia version (v526, which is the current mxlinux release on main and testing repos). This version, if I recall correctly its number, had a bug. I do remember the 'bug', and I am experiencing the same issues now. It's the Xorg process using CPU, on average, 25%.. while idle. And the experience on 4k UHD videos is sub-optimal (image stutters). Can I upgrade the driver' s version? I already downloaded the installer (file with run extension) fom nvidia.. but it failst with the message:

Code: Select all

ERROR: An NVIDIA kernel module 'nvidia-drm' appears to already be loaded in your kernel. This may be because it is in use (for example, by an X server, a CUDA program, or the NVIDIA Persistence Daemon), but this may also happen if your kernel was configured without support for module unloading. Please be sure to exit any programs that may be using the GPU(s) before attempting to upgrade your driver. If no GPU-based programs are running, you know that your kernel supports module unloading, and you still receive this message, then an error may have occurred that has corrupted an NVIDIA kernel module's usage count, for which the simplest remedy is to reboot your computer.
What would you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe later this week, if no updates are to be expected, I'll check how to go about downgrading the firmware drivers..

our current nvidia release is 525.

all that message is doing is telling you to reboot so that the new nvidia driver module takes over.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

sed s/526/525/g. Sorry. You' re correct, I' m using 525. Rebooted, tried to install the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-530.41.03.run that I downloaded, and got the same message, since mxlinux is not using Kmod, this is no surprise. Maybe I can reboot into a lower runlevel and try installing this binary in a CLI environment, wouldn' t that be possible? But I rather put the effort into packaging if that' s a possibility. Can I get some docs as to how this is done for mx? Feel free to PM. I' d like very much to contribute to the effort of getting an updated version of the nvidia drivers in testing repos.

:snail: edit: I will have to test this a few more days. I've reasons to believe now that the bug may be in KWin when it' s restarted after waking up from hibernation. After my last reboot, the system is working smoothly at the moment. I will suspend and go to sleep... will update in a few more days if the issue persist and I can confirm what' s going on.

ps. I am unable to use journalctl. What' s the alternative, other than diving into /var/log ?

You may try booting with the systemd option in GRUB menu advanced options to get journalctl to work...
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing
