Hi everybody,
at the moment I'm using the Canon MG3650 all-in-one device. I don't know why but MX doesn't find the scanner component anymore. Printing works good but I can't scan anymore although Canon's scan driver is still installed.
Now, has anybody got some experience with HP all-in-one devices or another manufacturer. I know there is HPLIP already installed with MX and I think it's not without reasons!? I'm wondering if switching to HP would be a better solution.
Thank you in advance for any help!

Re: Scanner (All-in-one device): Any recommendations?
If your current printer/scanner hasn't died I would suggest troubleshooting the to try to get the scanner component working again and keep a perfectly good device out of the landfills. Most of these all-in-one printers have a one button scan and print function so it acts as a photocopier. Does that work on yours? If so the physical scanner itself is still working.
Otherwise a forum search will turn up which ones people have had problems with, and a web search for individual combo printer brand and model names along with the term "linux" will yield information about them.
We bought a Canon Pixma E400 almost a decade ago. It's USB-only, no network printing, and the scanner can't handle legal or long bond paper very easily being meant for up to A4 letter size, but other than having to replace the ink cartridges thrice and an occasional paper jam caused my using cheap thin paper it's been absolutely trouble-free, and it's plug-and-play in MX 18 and 19. I don't think they make this printer any more though. I'd like to have a printer whose scanner could handle longer and larger documents but I can't see getting rid of this one as long as it's still working. "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

Re: Scanner (All-in-one device): Any recommendations?
Thank you! I searched the forum and the web since the device's scanner function causes problems since I switched to Linux. But so far I could help myself by restarting "Simple Scan" several times. NOW I probably could restart it until I die and I'm fed up with that xxxxxxx. So, I wasn't successfull with searching and my device does not have a button with which I can scan a document and send it to my laptop as a file. There are buttons for printing a copy but none for scanning.
Okay, so I'm gonna keep on searching..., maybe I'm simply a miserable searcher...?!

So you put an existing document on the scanner. press the Copy button, and it scans it then prints a copy? Then the scanner itself on your printer is working.
How about if you download and a burn copy of the MX ISO for the version of MX that you have at a USB stick, boot from it and install the printer & scanner drivers if needed? Can you scan then?

I suggest that you test the printer against a Windows machine just to verify that the scanner is still actually functioning before you start your search.
Most new HPs will work OTB with Linux. There are still some Windows only remnants on the market but those are being replaced with new models when they reach their EOL. You can check a new machine's linux compatibility against this list of supported devices from HP before you buy:

Re: Scanner (All-in-one device): Any recommendations?
Thank you folks! The scanner is definitely okay and working with Windows, a MacBook and even my wife's MX laptop without Canon drivers installed. Very frustrating! So I'm gonna try to find out if I missed something over the weekend...!
Re: Scanner (All-in-one device): Any recommendations?
Pls don't just buy any HP without confirming that it's Linux compatible. There's another thread started by mxmatrix where he plonked for one without full checks, and then had issues getting it to work. If it's not in the Linux list, don't just buy in hope. Remember you have to confirm both scanner and printer works in Linux.
For me, my last 2 MFC (multi-function) printer/scanner/fax machines have been Brother machines, where I first confirmed compatibility.
Current machine = MFC-L3750CDW
I'm not at my main PC right now, but I seem to recall that in Manjaro/Arch-based distros in the last few months, there was an upgrade where changes to made to sane (scanning) configs related to Canon and Epson machines. If I can find the message later (I save the terminal output of my last few updates for Manjaro/Arch!), I'll post it for what it's worth. Maybe something vital changed in respect of those printer/scanner brands or their drivers.

Allright, thanks!
Re: Scanner (All-in-one device): Any recommendations? [Solved]
I found a solution in Ubuntuusers Wiki: Since I usually used Simple Scan I didn't remember that Canon's scangearmp2 can be started via Terminal, simply with "scangearamp2". On the first start it showed me "no scanner". With a refresh button I could start a search which took a while but it found the scanner at last. I'm gonna keep on testing it in the next days but at least it seems like a solution with which I can work.

Re: Scanner (All-in-one device): Any recommendations?
That page is a pita! I put in into a Calc file for sorting. But even then trying to find a printer that met my needs on that list was painful. Maybe I got a single bad example (HP Laser NS 1020n), but I couldn't even find it on HP's website (plenty of 1020, no 1020n).
Edit: What that page really needs is what year the printer was last manufactured.
The file is attached to make everyone's life easier.
Best,
Michael
PS: What's the current version of HPLIP in MX?
