You mentioned "resetting BIOS parameters to reliably be able to boot from USB" ... verify your bios is not set to RAID for sata. And if you have no raid, then it should be set to AHCI.
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer

Check your /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file and see if it is specifying an raid, and if it is, then you need to figure out why it is.

And if your not running any raid, you should be able to just remove mdadm and that should resolve this.
No, I'm nor running any raid on this PC, even though the mobo apparently has quasi-hardware support for it (with which I have experience I don't wish to revisit).

Uninstalling the mdadm package, removing the mdadm.conf file and rebooting has reverted my system to its former state of an acceptably quick boot/MX startup, bearing in mind the mobo/procesor/GPU combination is a dead-end with known problems and no possible upgrade path.

Once again you have solved a issue for me on this system. Thank you.
