kde-plasma-desktop vs kde-full

#1 Post by arky217 »

I use MX linux ver. 23.2 bookworm with the xfce desktop.

If I want to try the kde plasma desktop, should I install
kde-plasma-desktop or kde-full ?

And if I install kde-plasme-desktop and want to stay with it,
do I then need to also install kde-full ?

*****************************************************************

Well, I went ahead and installed kde-plasma-desktop and
when I rebooted and selected kde, the menu is broken.
I click on the menu icon and get a small window that says
several files are missing. So, no menu and no way to shutdown
except the computer power button.

Should I uninstall kde-plasma-desktop and reinstall ?

kde-full should include kde-plasma-desktop as it is the full release of KDE:
  • kde-plasma-desktop = The bare minimum Plasma desktop.
  • kde-standard = The Plasma desktop with a few applications.
  • kde-full = The Plasma desktop with all included applications.
See if kde-standard works for you.

If I ran MX with Xfce, and I do, and if I wanted to try the KDE release of MX, I wouldn't try to install anything on the Xfce version.

I'd build a separate machine and install KDE on that. Or I'd swap out hard disks. Or I'd boot the KDE ISO live session and try it out for a few days before I made a decision to switch or not. Can you install multiple different DEs on a single machine? Sure, probably. Should you? I wouldn't. Not if I didn't know exactly what I was doing.

Snapshot or Timeshift can bridge some of those 'faith' gaps IMHO.
