Thanks to Charles V, I realized that xfce4-screensaver was the trigger, but not necessarly the cause. That left suspend as a possible cause. Well, I removed the screensaver.

Whole system went a bit nuts flashing screens when I removed the xfce screensaver.
(Edited this section. My humble apologies for leaving out the screensaver and typing just xfce.
I removed just the xfce4 screensaver.)

Not that I have noticed.
I am using the screensaver and suspend.
I will immediately change that.

But.. I am working on something and suddenly I cannot click.

But.. This I cannot answer ... is there a 2nd screensaver in the alternate user tab.

I had a drive failure and had reload on another drive using mx 23.6 64bit iso off a ventoy disk.
Btrfs locked the failed drive ... great work and glad I used btrfs all these years.

Usually (always?) system correctly works on boot.
Then after some use I can point at an item but cannot click and get ...

Second time in two years I had to rediscover this issue. MX 23.6 ... and this issue still exists.

aptitude is the cli installer. Installed by default in Mx. Much the same function as synaptic.
I have managed for years with MX-Linux. I always have disabled the mx installer.

Never needed mx installer. Gui or otherwise.
