Both of the grub entries found nothing, so I couldn't boot anything. It would indeed appear grub is not detecting the drive, as it only shows HD,2, which I believe is the flash drive?

Man, tell me about it. This is insane the amount of work it's taking simply to boot something else on a physical device. I'm not a Mac person, and really I'm just trying to revive this old laptop for a friend. So if it doesn't all work out, I guess I can just run with the original Mac install ...

Okay, I feel like we're getting warmer. Running apt update/upgrade after chroot indeed did the trick, didn't think about that. I've installed rEFInd, but the issue persists. The output of efibootmgr, which lists bootorder is:

0001, 0000, 0080
0000 = MX21
0001 = rEFInd Boot Manager
0080 = Mac OS X ...

I tried copying the refind.deb file (alternate installation method) into chroot, which worked, but I can't install it. I get a "system user got removed" error. And if I use sudo, I get an error saying "you do not exist in the passwd database.

Good suggestions, but neither worked. After installing, from the rescue menu, it does not detect the install. And for the second one, in chroot, it says package not found for refind.

Hmm, no dice. I'm not dual-booting, so I don't have to worry about that. I put in a fresh SSD, it's the only drive in the system. Made the USB using MX and in advanced options checked "GPT partitioning." Installed it to the Macbook without issue, but upon boot, I got the same question mark folder ...

I read through the rules and wasn't sure about this one. The version here is really old, but it seems that's the way it is on Debian: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/mangohud

My understanding was that booting the Mac goes in the order: Apple bootloader -> rEFInd -> grub. Which is why I'd read that you have to at least have some sort of valid OSX install for the Apple bootloader to succeed, which could then go to rEFInd, which would load grub. Convoluted, but it seemed to ...

So I've installed rEFInd on the original disk, which I was able to sucessfully wipe completely and reinstall standard OSX on. So at the very least, I have a computer that works. And with rEFInd, I'd be able to boot Linux once I have it installed. But I keep hitting ...

Install goes fine, just put a new drive in the laptop. MX sees it and the install is fine, but when I boot the computer, I get the slow blinking folder with a question mark on it, which I think means the computer can't find something to boot? I don't remember the password to the Mac originally from ...
