In my install (different than yours), there's a menu item called 'Desktop'. In that, there's a tab, "File/Launcher Icons" with a section called "Default Icons". Checking "Trash" will add the Trash icon to the desktop. As for adding a Trash icon to the Panel, I suspect a launcher to open the Trash ...

Here's one of many results from the search "linux customize terminal prompt". This was one of my first exercises - repeated as my preferences changed - to become more comfortable using the terminal and understanding where basic user settings are stored.

A solution to #2 exists using the panel's docklike taskbar plugin, but there may or may not be other solutions specific to how you normally launch your applications. Please specify how you launch your applications; list multiple methods, if applicable.
