Re: Spacer
I am sorry for my silly mistake. I have now checked for stacer (as opposed to spacer) on my desktop computer, and it was there of course. I will no go away to hide my face in shame. Thanks for the help.

Re: Spacer
Not quite sure what you mean there. It just gives me a list of mirrors around the world. When I install I just accept what ever mirror comes up. I do not know how to find out which one was used for each install.

Spacer
Recently I was recommended to install and use a program called spacer. I have a laptop which runs MX 19.4, always kept up to date. Via synaptic I found and installed spacer. No problem, and I find it very useful. So I went to my desktop computer, which also runs MX 19.4, kept up to date. Again I ...

Re: Sudden Jump to Text Only Screen
Further to my last post, I am pretty sure that I must have used Ctrl-Alt-F4 instead of just plain old F4. This would explain it. I am so used to having keyboard short cuts which start with Ctrl-Alt. Anyway, if it happens again I will try Ctrl-Alt-F7. Sorry for wasting peoples' time.

Re: Sudden Jump to Text Only Screen
I should open the terminal with just plain F4. Since I use Ctrl-Alt with other characters for some items (eg Ctrl-Alt-x to open Firefox, Ctrl-Alt-v for the Vivaldi browser) it is possible that I am entering Ctrl-Alt-F4 by mistake. Never thought of that. What would that combination do? (I am too ...

Re: Sudden Jump to Text Only Screen
If/when it happens again I will first of all try ctrl-alt-F7. I should have thought of that. Problem is that it happens at random, so I don't know if and when. Thanks for all the help with what to try next time it happens. It still seems a mystery as to why it happening?

Re: Sudden Jump to Text Only Screen
Is it a full login prompt? I think so. the second line just says password and waits for me to enter my password (I have only the one) which it rejects. I will try one of the suggested inputs, Ctrl-Alt-Esc or Ctrl-Alt-backspace to see if that helps. Thanks.

Re: Sudden Jump to Text Only Screen
Answers to some questions. I have never used suspend.
I open the terminal screen using a keyboard shortcut, function key F4.
I have never had anything to do with a "keyring", whatever that is. Something to do with PGP?
What I am really asking is how to close down safely if this happens again ...
