Re: Looking at options - systemd with sysVinit skeleton?

Yes, there is: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=68318

Yep. Haven't read it all yet, but it is clear there is something there for me. Clearly, Dolphin_Oracle has nailed it.
I'll read on for further ...

Re: Oh, no! Not the dreaded black/blank screen thing!!! Noooooo!!!!
Looks installed now.
But looks like did not do an update-grub maybe because of that timeout.
sudo update-grub
Nup, Dolphin_Oracle, it kinda worked. [Missed your post before I did reboot etc.] Anyway, from your work I got sysVinit back again, but it was the dysfunctional sysVinit. Being ...

Re: Oh, no! Not the dreaded black/blank screen thing!!! Noooooo!!!!
the installation is not in your apt history, so whatever you did, it didn't complete.
the removal of those packages shows up on 8/27, with systemd-sysv being installed on 8/27 with dbus-broker. but there is no reinstallation of sysvinit-core and systemd-shim on between 8/27 and 8/31.
so try to ...

Re: Oh, no! Not the dreaded black/blank screen thing!!! Noooooo!!!!
Post the apt-history and the current quick-system-info please.
I’ve already told you the Mx way.
Also if your grub menu is
Controlled by some other install, you’ll need to run update-grub on it to see new menu entries.
As per your previous instruction, I ran
sudo apt install sysvinit-core ...

Re: Oh, no! Not the dreaded black/blank screen thing!!! Noooooo!!!!
sudo apt install sysvinit-core systemd-shim
yeah looks ok. as long as you are ok with removing dbus-broker. I don't know what that is.
Hello, Dolphin_Oracle et al
Yes; done as shown. I did remove that dbus file, as persuaded by the system. Afterwards, I still could boot only to ...
