HP LaserJet 1018 driver will not install [Solved]

#1 Post by danielson »

The following protocol has worked flawlessly to install HP LaserJet 1018 on any LinuxMint desktop, so decided to try it out on MX KDE: [Solved]

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove hplip cups-filters cups hplip-data system-config-printer-udev

sudo rm -v -rf /usr/share/hplip

sudo apt-get install printer-driver-foo2zjs printer-driver-foo2zjs-common

sudo apt-get install tix groff dc cups cups-filters

sudo getweb 1018

d. Disconnect the USB cable of the printer, count to five and reconnect it.

e. Launch the application Printers again from the menu and add your printer; you may have to click on the "refresh" button (the round arrow) first. Then print a test page.

f. Reboot your computer and turn the printer off and on. All should be well now permanently.

- - - -

Problem here on MX KDE, is at last "sudo" tip:
sudo getweb 1018
getweb: Couldn't download http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/firmware/sihp1018.tar.gz

So, add printer manually.
Still no go for the driver.

Setup HP toolbox from MX Package Installer;
-CUPS goes well, but still won't print.

Will reboot now after removing printer and try to add again with HP toolbox this time.

- - - - -

Rebooted now, tried to install with HP toolbox.
CUPS works fine with FOOZ etc.
But HP toolbox does not pickup up the printer.

Tried hp-plugin -i in konsole:

Checking for network connection...
Downloading plug-in from:
Downloading plug-in: [\ ] 0% error: Plugin download failed with error code = 8

error: file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered

HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

MX not on that list?

Why then, up until only a few weeks ago, was i able to install it on MX with the simple hp-plugin command?

@j2mcgreg did install latest HP toolbox as per the link, and still get:

error: Plugin download failed with error code = 8
error: file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered

I just noticed that your main repo is the one at R.I.T. in Rochester, NY. It has been flaky for months. Use Repo Manager in MX Tools to switch to Utah, Salt Lake City, then log out / log in to activate the change and then try hp-setup again.

@j2mcgreg - did that, still an error message: checksum corrupt or something to that effect.

Tried hp-plugin -i and got similar message:

error: Plugin download failed with error code = 8

error: file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered

-even let MX decide for best with OR,IL,NY - still a no go.

@gor9 - clicking on the download link brings to a page filled with script.

You are not alone in having problems with "hp plugin"' Here's a thread from the Linux Mint forums that offers some workarounds and solutions:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=343350
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram

You guys are tops!! :)

As @gor9 suggested, went over to the download link, saved the script as text, made it executable, ran hp toolbox again, chose file to install and... it worked!!!

Never did this procedure before.
