What is your favorite file backup app?

#1 Post by danielson »

So far, i sync files with Dropbox (have done so since its inception).
With OnlyOffice, there is no direct option to automatically sync to Dropbox (at least as far as i can see).
Looking for easy, practical setup (as i slowly move onto Nexcloud).

Have you tried Mega. I use it to backup all my files as you get 50gb free.

No, have never tried Mega, but it is good to know about.

Actually wanting a reliable app to sync files from MX Document folder to Dropbox for now.
OnlyOffice does not presently have option to do that.

How is the security on Mega, and how has the responsiveness of the system been for you? I signed up for a free 5GB account when he first started the service, but haven't looked at it in a few years. I'd be interested in using it again, as 50GB free would handle nearly all my needs, but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on security.

Also, do any of the MX apps have direct hooks into Mega? Can you do real-time synchronization?

Surely all you need to do is store your documents within the Dropbox folder, whatever you have used to create them?

I have used FreeFileSync for years, initially with Windows and now with MX Linux (it's in the stable repository) and I am completely happy with it.

I'm not exactly sure if this is the type of application you're looking for so you may want to look at its web site https://freefilesync.org and see if that would fit your needs.

@Stuart_M - haven't looked up that app for a long time!
Have used Karen's Replicator in Windows and a few others.
Will take a look at it, thanks!

@chrispop99 - OnlyOffice has a few sync options but Dropbox isn't on their list.
Can save files to the desktop with it too, which is why i was wanting to hear about sync apps from users here.

Depends on the type of data being synced...

I use a few different sync apps, depending on where the destination is:
- to a USB stick or external HD: grsync
- to a remote cloud server which I control: syncthing
- to friends, where I send them a link: Nextcloud, and I upload using XFCE's Thunar file browser, which can connect to Nextcloud's WebDAV.
