Rules for posting images

If allowed, I can provide more information. I will try to be as general as possible to avoid problems which might make me go against the TOS on this site.

Recently, I posted a picture in the forums which referred to another Linux distro. I have been accused on other sites of promoting that distro as if it was "better" than all others. This is simply not the case. In fact, it is much the opposite. When I refer to another distro, I am actually telling the people of that distro (in this case MX Linux) what I like about the other distro. If I didn't care about one distro, I definitely would not sign up and become a member to tell them about other distros. For example, if KFC, Kentucky Fried Chicken, didn't sell salads but I liked salads, I would say, "Hey KFC, why don't you give us salads like SALADSRUS along with your chicken?"

I am not a salad salesman for SALADSRUS trying to get MX Linux users to leave MX Linux and come to the SALADSRUS compound. I am just communicating features I would like to see the target audience (MX Linux in this case) think about integrating into their development.

With that said, the image displayed through imgur was changed by a moderator to be link only. This is the first time I have encountered this. Usually a moderator will completely remove the photo and close my account. But here, they at least said, "Read the TOS". I went to one page about TOS, and I could only see reference to more obvious stuff, like no misrepresentation of the site, and if you want to do some kind of copying you should label it with "respin".

But I can't see anywhere it shows TOS as it pertains to what I did. I assume it is because it refers to another Linux distro, which I repeat was not meant for "competition" reasons. And as mentioned, if I didn't like MX Linux, I would not be posting here. I would not have an account like this active. I would just leave and not even say good luck.

Any clarification on some rule I didn't follow would be appreciated. As of now, I will just assume it is due to the mentioning of another distro. I have not mentioned any distro in this post other than MX Linux.

Not sure what post you are referring too, but as the rules state on images
Images added to post via hot links from other websites will be limited to a 640 x 620 pixel size as they appear in the Forum post. Large images take up large areas of the post and thread space, are distracting and impede the flow of the thread. You can post the link to the full image without the [img] tags. You can also choose the "Large" image option if logged in. If not logged in and the image is a public image, add the letter l to the end of the imgur link (before the '.jpg').
Animated images, such as gifs, shall be no larger than 120 x 120 pixels.
I really do not think the issue was about 'another os' - however, we DO have a rule against NO bashing for any OS.

Is this the TOS your referring to?

Ok, but if it is a size issue (I admit the image may have taken up a large amount of screen space as is), there is no thumbnail option to keep it within the 640 x 620 pixel size? That would just put the image within those dimensions, right? I would be very surprised if that wasn't possible today. That's why I didn't consider dimensions as the problem, but maybe it is. I would even think we had the technology to detect dimensions and then say "Can't be used". In fact, if you look at the image I used at Puppy Linux, they only allowed 6kb. I was able to chip down the rockin frog to be accepted here. And .png too!!!

Always something new to learn. I will make sure the image is within "pixel range" from now on.

Just under the window your typing in for a reply or post, is an Add Image to Post link, which pretty much does everything for you. Just drop your image into that form and its all done. ( or you can click on the dialog in that same window and choose your image) You dont even have to post your image any other place... it is all done for you - including the thumb

This keeps the sizes post to the site minimal and you can have what ever size image you want - linked.

Example:

You will find this near the bottom of the rules. viewtopic.php?t=29041

Generally I select the "thumbnail for forum" options when using third party image services.

Then, why not disable that from the "Full Editor & Preview" section which is now hidden with "Save draft" and then "Preview"?

Maybe we are getting to the nitty gritty now. What are the rules if we opt for the "Full Editor & Preview" section?

Which site were you using?

(I use postimage myself...https://postimages.org/)

I don't think that should matter. It was imgur, that's usually my go to for posting images.

If you read the rules, or what I posted, they state
limited to a 640 x 620 pixel size
and... the attachment portions states
Maximum filesize per attachment: 150 KiB
.

And both of your images failed at the size of the rules.

Just use the "Add image to post" and its easier, faster and fulfills all the rules.

And, if you WANT to create the thumb (for forum) and then link back to some place - you certainly can to all the manual part of that you like - just keep those sizes down please.

I have an imgur account as well but I don't like that they don't have a thumbnail option.
That's why I prefer to use postimage and the forum provides a quick link to the postimage site as well.

No, we can't throw blame that way. I appreciate the fact you might be a postimage fan, and I might try them out now that you posted about them.

However, the point is, we should have a system in place whether it be imgur or postimage to put images in the desired dimensions.

Imgur doesn't have an option to provide thumbnail links, so my screenshots I post to that site will show up on the forum
as 2560x1440 images which is way beyond the forum limit of 640 x 620 and 150kB size.

They do offer a share link option which will provide a link to the image from their site, like this. https://imgur.com/kfXV5ss

Postimage provides an addon for the Forum (Add image to post) at the bottom of the post block, that is easy to use and generates images that meet the Forum requirements. It was added about two years ago for that very purpose. I encourage its use.

And, you can also just use postimage to create multiple types of links too. Example, I usually have images in PCloud. Then I use postimg.cc to get the 'wrapper' for my image (thumb and html to the big pic ) all done for you - very slick.

After you upload you have these choices:

@siamhie just for info, it is possible to embed thumbnails from an imgur link using this formatting

Code: Select all

[url=https://imgur.com/1234567] [img]https://imgur.com/1234567X.png[/img][/url]
where the 1234567 is the imgur link code and the X is one of the following

1234567s- small 90x90 thumbnail
Image

Code: Select all

[url=https://imgur.com/75ycmPT] [img]https://imgur.com/75ycmPTs.png[/img][/url]

1234567m- medium 320x180 thumbnail
Image

Code: Select all

[url=https://imgur.com/75ycmPT] [img]https://imgur.com/75ycmPTm.png[/img][/url]

1234567l- large 640x360 thumbnail
Image

Code: Select all

[url=https://imgur.com/75ycmPT] [img]https://imgur.com/75ycmPTl.png[/img][/url]

as everybody has pointed out, it is much easier just using the forum's postimage plugin. You can even drag the image from a file manager and just drop it into the post.

Great suggestion and easy, especially if you prefer not to edit graphics locally.

Clicking on the image gives this.
{"data":{"error":"Imgur is temporarily over capacity. Please try again later."},"success":false,"status":403}
I was an Imgur user but it is a PIA.

I only created an imgur account back when we were having postimage issues.
Yesterday I logged into my three year old imgur account for the first time in awhile and had to change my password for some reason.

Long live postimage. :rofl:
