So long, and thanks for all the fish

#1 Post by thomasl »

It appears these days even talking about AI-generated content with the intent of trying to foster a reasonable discussion about these matters but without posting any such content is already off-limits on the MX Linux Forum (see viewtopic.php?t=85592 -- this thread was closed six minutes after I started it, with a terse message about "moderator review", whatever that means). So be it.
However, such a (IMO heavy-handed) mod action mixes well with other trends I've observed over the last couple years. There's "the usual sneer-fest towards the OP" (thanks to @AltairIV for that apt and memorable wording) which is rearing its ugly head rather often nowadays, there's always the QSI brigade out in force, the language police etc -- though often it's not so much the content as such but the tone that grates.
Anyway. I will probably get a warning from a mod for again mentioning AI in a post (though only in passing). Save your firepower for more deserving targets as I will self-ban myself from forum.mxlinux.org (though I will remain a happy user of MX). If it's at all possible I would appreciate if one of the admins could delete my account. It was good while it lasted.
To the devs: keep up the good work.

Ditto.

Sorry to see you go, Dude.

IIRC, you were around for quite a while, and helped me in at least a few spots...

Maybe re-consider leaving (if that's possible), or...

Re-invent yourself on the Forum :whoknows:

I would also like to see your scripts in Zsh, as I'm trying to re-learn Bash, and which has led me to investigating Zsh...

:crossfingers:

Don't let AI dictate your behavior.

AI assistance can sometimes be useful, but in moderation and appropriately, especially on a human-to-human forum.

I would like to point out that the linked post in thomasl's first post did not break forum rules at all, and was locked and never unlocked.
AI generated posts, code and respins are not allowed to be posted.
Now maybe it should have been in "chat" but whatever.

I can't wait for the day when I can provide a fix to someone, and not be allowed to post it because AI generated the code.

+1000

I've refrained from commenting on these matters as it's so flammable and there are enormous misunderstandings about AI, and a general lack of expertise in these matters abound, leading to low quality discussion that is more emotion driven than based on the actual applications and technical uses incorporating AI technologies in different ways. Actual AI solutions for clients is one side of the whole thing, but for an everyday workflow example in a developer setting, using AI as a focused, contex-targeted tool in autocompleting one single line at a time in order to assist with / check some specific syntax when working on a codebase you are already familiar with... is vastly different from being programming-illiterate and just generating whole programs without any means to judge the quality and side effects of the resulting program. Lumping everything into "this is AI TALK and there was AI used, bad bad" would be really detrimental in the long run, and for one, I hope this is not the default we're seeing more and more. It's reassuring to see the actual devs speak up on this.

I sympathize with moderators, they make the forum work and not be full of crap, but at the same time they should moderate themselves a bit... also, I disagree with their AI position.

They are afraid that the forum will be overrun by AI slop, but AI is useful in many ways. I already broke the rule here: viewtopic.php?p=826686#p826686 and I think AI helped me structure the response better than what I would have done it by myself. I think we should not ban tools, if we need to ban something it should be based on the content rules not on what tool was used to write it. For instance if they don't like posts with too many emoticons and too long they could make a rule about that, but not "it's AI generated therefore it's not allowed".

Also, how does one detect AI generated text? It's not clear cut at all.

good point @Adrian the moderators do a good job at a pretty hard task. I don't want to take away from that.
