MX23.6 KDE x64 won't update CPP-12

#1 Post by gafferb »

Have had no problems with updating MX23 until earlier this year when cpp-12 fails. All other updates work flawlessly.

This is what I get:
<html>Package failed to install:<br/><br/>Error while installing package: cannot copy extracted data for &apos;./usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/12/cc1&apos; to &apos;/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/12/cc1.dpkg-new&apos;</html>

Can anyone identify why this happens?

When the version changes to MX25 will this automatically get resolved?

Hope someone knows the answer to my problem.
regards
Gafferb

Most people will do a reinstall to upgrade to MX 25; preserving /home and using the UIP tool to copy and reinstall their user-installed programs.

Also:

Code: Select all

4: deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-backports main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
Generally, we and Debian do not recommend leaving the backports repo enabled at all times.

What's your output for

Code: Select all

apt policy cpp-12

It should be at present:

Code: Select all

$ apt policy cpp-12
cpp-12:
  Installed: 12.2.0-14+deb12u1
  Candidate: 12.2.0-14+deb12u1
  Version table:
*** 12.2.0-14+deb12u1 500
        500 http://deb.debian.org/debian bookworm/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

That would make the most sense considering there's many major changes under the hood in trixie that could trigger a few gotchas. As I have MX-23 KDE there's major changes between Plasma 5 and 6 and that I've customized my desktop heavily enough to not risk just a mere upgrade to 25 via apt so planning a clean reinstall instead and using the UIP tool plus noting the things I've done to my setup to replicate it after installing MX-25 fresh.

Yes, I wouldn't advise MX23-KDE users to preserve /home due to the old Plasma 5 configs in there.

Yes so true as going directly from Plasma 5 to 6 might have a lot of unwanted side effects so it's a good idea to rename your home folder out of the way and create a new one within the installer. Once all done copy certain data from the old home folder to the new.

It definitely does.

The Manjaro forum was full of help requests (or just upset posts) last year when Plasma 6 rolled in....

Well, your error message is messed up in the original post, so could you try upgrading again in a terminal, and then copypasting the error within the <code> tags in a message here?

Have tried to update in the Konsole using sudo apt upgrade but this comes up with:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
cpp-12 : Depends: gcc-12-base (= 12.2.0-14) but 12.2.0-14+deb12u1 is installed
gcc-12 : Depends: cpp-12 (= 12.2.0-14+deb12u1) but 12.2.0-14 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

Following that I get:
The following additional packages will be installed:
cpp-12
Suggested packages:
gcc-12-locales cpp-12-doc
The following packages will be upgraded:
cpp-12
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
2 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0 B/9,768 kB of archives.

And this is the result:
Preparing to unpack .../cpp-12_12.2.0-14+deb12u1_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking cpp-12 (12.2.0-14+deb12u1) over (12.2.0-14) ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/cpp-12_12.2.0-14+deb12u1_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I don't know what else I can do now. Whether or not I have any programs that need these files I haven't a clue! Do I just ignore the cpp-12 issues for the time being and start a new clean installation when MXLinux v25 becomes stable?
Any thoughts would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Please post code like this
code output here
for better readability.

Or you can select the code and tick the </> button (it's next to the quote)

Thanks.
