GUI - Parts of Exit-Options do not work

#1 Post by LinuxBastler »

Hi there,

After cleaning, repasting, changing to a SSD and upgrading the RAM to 8 GB, I've installed MX Linux 64-Bit with Fluxbox on my old Dell Latitude e4310 a few months ago as my only OS. It always works like a charm and I was always very happy with my machine. I've installed it with the legacy settings of the machine's BIOS, as the old Windows 10 was, and it worked perfect. All provided updates were installed and never happend any issue.
Normally, after finishing my work I shutdown my machine with the shutdown-button of the exit options. But since yesterday this it's not possible anymore. The options "Restart Fluxbox", "Lockscreen" and "Log Out" work perfectly fine, but "Suspend", "Reboot" and "Shutdown" do not work anymore. To figure out if this is a general problem with my system, I tried to restart and then shutdown via terminal with "sudo shutdown -r now" and "sudo shutdown -h -P now", respectively. Both worked perfectly fine. I also did some quick search in the internet, if this is a well known issue, and I found some hints. But, as I'm still learning Linux, I didn't find a solution for my problem and that's why I would like kindly ask for your help! Is this a kind of broken link within the Exit-Options? Do you have a workaround that will help?
For further information, here's a copy of the QSI of my machine:

Welcome In!

Are those options available after a restart and login ?
( There is a bug that has been seen for logout / login killing some ability )
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.

is likely related to some code changes in exit-options, best to wait until @Adrian looks by.

I think I fixed it, it should be here (or wait till the update comes from the repos, it might take a day):

@Adrian just to confirm, 25.7 was broken as per OP, 25.7.01 is working correctly. :happy: thanks

@LinuxBastler Thank you for the comprehensive error report.
I forgot to say welcome aboard, so welcome aboard! I hope you're enjoying mxfb.
Since you've been using it for a couple of months, I presume you've got fluxbox set up the way you like. If you're so inclined, feel free to post a screenshot in the mxfb-screenshot thread viewtopic.php?t=55055. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, I just find it interesting to see the different ways people set up their mxfb.

Thanks, fixed today morning.
I only noticed the bug yesterday because my exit is configured differently.

@LinuxBastler
Just one of the many examples of how to customize and tune Fluxbox using submenus or keyboard commands, relevant to the topic.

On the one hand, an older exit menu is integrated as a submenu, and

Code: Select all

#exit
[begin] (shutdown)
        [exec] (Refresh) {fluxbox-remote restart; idesktoggle idesk refresh }
        [exec] (Suspend) {sudo 'pm-suspend'}
        [exit] (Logout)
        [exec] (Reboot) {sudo /sbin/reboot}
        [exec] (Shutdown) {sudo /sbin/halt}
[separator]

[exec] (Einträge editieren) {featherpad /home/winnI/.fluxbox/submenus/exit} </home/winnI/myicons/geany-3.png>

[end]
"shutdown" is also available via the keyboard (KEYS file), because it's faster than any menu entry.

Code: Select all

#### Keyboard shortcuts
Control c Control x :exec sudo poweroff

In my opinion, Fluxbox has the weakest options for visually impressive interfaces. Configuration is sometimes awkward (text files, not everything has a GUI)... but when it comes to optimizing workflows and how quickly you want to achieve your goals and applications, beyond the colorful appearance, it doesn't need to hide behind giants like Gnome, KDE, XFCE, Mate, or Cinnamon ;-}

Welcome aboard

There are consequences.

in this case there is a gui for configuration: exit-options-manager ;)
