Strange Resolution Issue: [SOLVED]

#1 Post by operadude »

Just wanted to post this, since it still might be an issue for some:

Brand new install of my Personal Snapshot (KDE, in this instance; but, it also happened with both Xfce & Fluxbox) on a resurrected 2009 Asus i-5 desktop (QSI shows that the UEFI/BIOS date is 2015, but that was after my BIOS update! The original machine/motherboard is from 2009). Here's the QSI from the "new" machine (which I will dedicate for testing):

So, after installing Fluxbox, Xfce, and finally, KDE: whatever I did, and no matter how much I tried to tweak, the screen resolution was off-- but just a bit !!! -- where the outlines of windows in full-screen mode were just outside of the screen borders. This led me to have to resize the full-size "window", so that I could, for example, actually see and click-on the "x" to close the window, or the middle "box/window" to resize, or even to see the "-", to minimize the window. Couldn't see any of those!

Like I said, I tried all the tweaks in all Distros (Flux, Xfce, KDE), but I couldn't manage to get the windows to fit on the screen properly, even though everything seemed to check out (using CLI to show the available resolutions for my monitor):

Code: Select all

xrandr --verbose | grep -w connected
Oh, and to make matters even more strange:

I tried all the tweaks at my disposal in the UEFI/BIOS settings, and swapping-out VGA, DMI, and HDMI cables, both from the "new" computer's GPU (Nvidia graphics card on PCIe slot), and from the onboard graphics. I even went so far to swap-out the Nvidia card, and replace it with an identical graphics card that I have my main rig using, on the very same monitor! And, yes, I checked: there are 3 HDMI-in ports, and they all work fine.

EDIT/ADDENDUM: I also tried installing the Nvidia drivers for the Nvidia graphics card. For some reason, that made matters worse-- All text/graphics was way too huge (400% or more!), and was unable to navigate through windows or menus. I had to remove the Nvidia drivers:

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
EDIT/ADDENDUM: Using, the exact same monitor on a different machine (my main rig), I DO NOT have this issue for any of my distros, and DO NOT have to play with the screen resolution. So, I couldn't figure "what gives" !?!

Long story short (and here's where it's obvious that I "buried the lead"), I did some searching on Ye Ole' MX FORUM, and found this:

viewtopic.php?p=766347#p766347

So, after days of all the tweaking (oh, I forgot to mention all of my attempts to rule-out issues with my Snapshot, trying and re-trying various Snapshots, and just regular ISOs from the MX download page)...

I read the link posted above, grabbed my TV remote, and did the following:

Menu -> Picture -> More -> Picture Options -> Size -> "Just Scan"

And, Voila :exclamation:

Picture-Perfect :p

So, to echo the many posts on this Forum about the AWESOMENESS of the Forum, its Devs, Maintainers, Moderators, and Members:

Just "YES" :celebrate:

Good job!! Glad it is resolved and thanks for posting the fix too !!
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

P.S. I am adding a couple of notes to the original post-- steps I originally forgot to mention. I will mark them with "EDIT/ADDENDUM" in the body of the text.
