workspace names (very minor topic)

I'm looking for a different way to name MXFB workspaces besides the uninspiring one we have had forever (W-1, W-2).
--I tried to use unicode for circled numbers
u2461, u2462, etc.
but just get the code
--I sort of like this:
#1, #2, etc.
thoughI'm not sure that it would work for non-English speakers
Anybody have ideas?

That's very neat, as long as the user doesn't change to more than 2. But I do wonder whether it might similar enuf to a folder that it function would be unclear.
Thanks for the suggestions, people. I'm still leaning myself to the "#1" idea, where the series number's role would be obvious.

If you want 4 workspaces, you just use 4 glyphs. Workspace names would then be filled/outline/outline/outline, outline/filled/outline/outline, outline/outline/filled/outline, outline/outline/outline/filled.
But I do wonder whether it might similar enuf to a folder that it function would be unclear.
There are other glyphs, eg. filled and outline circles.
The font-awesome website also has dice, which would enable up to 6 workspaces, but I'm not sure if they're included in the version we're using.

To me, it looks odd when I bring up the workspace menu. I'm reading it as Workspace number 1, Workspace number 2, etc.

This makes more sense. Now I read it as Workspace 1, Workspace 2, etc. But that's just me.

How would one incorporate workspaces 7-12? fluxbox can have up to 12 workspaces maximum.

If you can have #1, can you not have Workspace 1?
That could mean translating 'Workspace', of course. Is an icon or ASCI art of some sort feasible, these being more universally recognised?
@1, [-1-], [-2-] ...?

These glyphs are in Hack Nerd Font
This font also offers simple blocks with digit only
and stack-lined squares with digits --> which I quite like :)
fwiw: nearly all fontawesome glyphs are included in the Hack Nerd Font...

You'll need the Hack
Nerd font - which I believe is not in mxpi.
Check out
https://www.nerdfonts.com - or download the 17mb
hack-nerd-font zip-archive directly
https://github.com/ryanoasis/nerd-fonts ... 0/Hack.zip
Once downloaded, you only need to extract the
HackNerdFont-Regular.ttf to your home font folder

Well, my bad too...
When using the
HackNerdFont-Regular.ttf (that I provided a download link for above), then most of the fontawesome glyphs look partly cut-off -- and the workspace glyphs (like dice etc) do not show at all !!
However, when using an earlier version of
Hack Regular Nerd Font Complete.ttf, then all glyphs are intact and display correctly...
Please feel free to download a copy of this 2022 version from my Google drive:

@Melber @ceeslans I installed the Hack Nerd Font (
https://www.nerdfonts.com/font-downloads) but the glyph's don't show up with fluxbox's toolbar.
@Jerry3904 @Adrian If you leave this variable blank, fluxbox names it Workspace by default. Would the system default language change it for the user?

Why not unicode, as suggested in #1,
e.g:
U+2780 = ➀ U+2781 = ➁ U+2782 = ➂
U+2783 = ➃ U+2784 = ➄ U+2785 = ➅
U+2776 = ❶ U+2777 = ❷ U+2778 = ❸
U+2779 = ❹ U+277A = ❺ U+277B = ❻
U+2680 = ⚀ U+2681 = ⚁ U+2682 = ⚂
U+2683 = ⚃ U+2684 = ⚄ U+2685 = ⚅
Unicode: Ctrl+Shift+U and type hexcode

These symbols
do show up correctly in fluxbox toolbar (and in rootmenu), provided a suitable font is used, such as DejaVu Sans (see below scrot)

So the $60 question: is anybody (besides me) interested in using this as default workspace name? We'd have to consider how to enable it for general users, such as
--add at least one disabled alternative in init. It won't be persistent and maybe "categorize" becomes "MX default"
--add a short treatment to the MXFB Manual
--or something else

I'd be in favour of symbols instead of the current W-1, W-2.
Will think about how to do it. Am coming around to the idea of setting the various toolbar fonts in the overlay file rather than in the style.

I quite like the use of symbols for workspace names -- but to have a consistent display in other window-types/applications (like fluxbox rootmenu, or rofi's workspace-menu etc), such will need to be limited also to 'symbol-capable' fonts only.
My vote goes to simple 1,2,3,4 or W1,W2,W3,W4 and the likes ...

Yes Melber, /overlay can control the workspacename font, because it is a Style variable (it can cause impact to the height of the fluxbox toolbar;)
session..WorkspaceNames: is not a Style variable, therefore it cannot be controlled by /overlay.
Jerry3904, "disabled alternative in /init." this type of thing, /init comments, can possibly be dissolved with a reconfigure of /init. Not durable assurance.
Is workspacename a place to insert an infinity glyph? wink.

OK, I think we're done with this
very minor topic and appreciate everyone's putting time and thought into it. My final thoughts:
--I would really like to see us move away from "W-1" for MX-25 which IMO is
just plain old in more ways than one
--circled numbers appeal to me, but they are complicated for the end user and small (on tint2 at least)
--glyphs are even more complicated for end users
--I find that numbers alone are potentially ambiguous ("one what?")
Leaving me with a couple of options that I consider meaningful and simple for all (showing each highlighted):
w1, w2
#1, #2
Can we choose between those?

I'd say we go for w1, w2
At least the preceding 'w' keeps some reference to 'workspace' - instead of '#' which could be interpreted as 'ranking' ...

I second the letter/number combo over the hashtag/number.
Since fluxbox refers to the virtual desktops as Workspaces, you could even do something like ws1, ws2, etc.

Hello Jerry3904 and Everyone
Difficulty improving W-1 proves W-1 was a grand decision.
ws1 is grand, new.
wORKsPACE name needs to be this short to fit on tint2 vertical, right?
Settings that make mx-fluxbox
live iso wonderful.
Will think it again when ws1 shows up in the toolbar, Thanks Jerry3904.
Agreed that the fluxbox translation of the word Workspace can be lengthy.
When willing to have longer workspace names
there is chance to create with the name
also a reminder of key navigation for dispatch go direct to show specific Workspace Desktop.
antiX fluxbox /keys for example supports "CTRL+F1 - CTRL+F12: Switch to the 1st → 12th workspace" so the workspace name can be Ctrl F1,ctrl+F2,ctrl F3,...rl F12.
Workspace name being key name requires not translation.
Is that a quick way to learn a keybind?
mx-fluxbox /keys hoping to have no conflicts with Shift F1-F12, so
the workspace name can be Shift F1,Shift+F2,Shift F3, [twelve=F12]
after adding the twelve keybinds in /keys
first delete or disable # an active Shift F1 :Exec mx-manual
Code: Select all
# open help
Ctrl F1 :Exec mxfb-help
# Shift F1 :Exec mx-manual
# Go to workspace F1 > F12
Shift F1 :Workspace 1
Shift F2 :Workspace 2
Shift F3 :Workspace 3
Shift F4 :Workspace 4
Shift F5 :Workspace 5
Shift F6 :Workspace 6
Shift F7 :Workspace 7
Shift F8 :Workspace 8
Shift F9 :Workspace 9
Shift F10 :Workspace 10
Shift F11 :Workspace 11
Shift F12 :Workspace 12
Shorten the key reminder workspace name by applying the symbol for Shift key is an up arrow.
WorkspaceNames: ^F1 ,^F2 ,^F3 ,^F4 ,^F5 ,^F6 ,^F7 ,^F8 ,^F9 ,^F10,^F11,^F12,
ws1,ws2, is grand.

session.screen0.workspaceNames:
session.screen0.workspaces: 250
