How to install Thunderbird 137 under MX-Linux

Hello,

i must install Thunderbird 137 under "MX-Linux 23-6" because all my profile-data are from 137 (under Fedora).
With apt i can only install "Thunderbird 128".
I will not use a flatpack or snap.

I have download "thunderbird-137.0.2.tar.xz" from https://www.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/all/, but i can't install it.
I found a deb-paket unter https://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/t/thunderbird/, but if i try to install it, i become this german error message:
Die folgenden Pakete haben unerfüllte Abhängigkeiten:
thunderbird-l10n-de : Hängt ab von: thunderbird (>= 1:137.0-1) aber 1:128.9.0esr-1~deb12u1 soll installiert werden
E: Probleme können nicht korrigiert werden, Sie haben zurückgehaltene defekte Pakete.
I found no way to clear this error.

Is there a ppa for Thunderbird under MX-Linux available and how use it under MX?

Greetings from Germany
Kralle

You may be able to set up your accounts under thunderbird 128. If it is just email, you will likely find that it works well MX-Linux is based on debian stable. The message in German after being translated by firefox is "The following packages have unfulfilled dependencies:
thunderbird-l10n-de : hangs from: thunderbird (>> 1:137.0-1) but 1:128.9.0esr-1-deb12u1 should be installed
E: Problems cannot be corrected, you have retained broken packages." The dependency you need is libotr5t64_4.1.1-6_amd64.deb, but it seems to be in debian unstable at this time. It will not install in debian bookworm on which MX -23 is based on. Perhaps someone can backport the needed packages. Fedora is a fast moving distro. They have a new release every 6 months, Ubuntu does the same. Ubuntu has a "Long Term support, the last version is 24.04. The next long term support from Ubuntu will be in April of 2026. Debian is expected to release it's nest version this year. Debian Stable does only bug fixes and security updates until the next version, which will be Debian 13 (trixie). I downloaded the tarball from the thunderbird web page. When the tar ball is extracted it works. I simply ran if from my Download folder. Perhaps someone else will have more information. Debian by default uses Firefox-esr and probably the same with thunderbird. MX-Linux replaces Firefox-esr with the newest release of firefox. I don't know if the team at Mx-linux is able to backport the packages need for the latest version. All of the maintainers of MX-Linux are unpaid volunteers. However they do and excellent job.

So now it is Fedora trying to "trap" their users with the Thunderbird very newest version. lol
Actually because of cases like yours I thought MX had been forced to do the same.
It began with the newest version being put in the MX test-repo.
Maybe we ought to ask nicely for that virtue to be taken up again.?

I guess you already know the Thunderbird developers have been working on some import- and export tools for a long time.
They would not work for me the last time I did a test, and I don't know if any of them are backward compatible.

@Jakob77 You can try a package request in the proper forum, as you know since you have been here long enough. Whether the request gets granted is up to the devs.

Good to know.
Information on how to deal with problems from mail clients is important.

Lots of version 137 in multiple languages here https://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/t/thunderbird/ including German.
