Surround-sound upgrade for vintage kit?

Just wondering if it's possible yet to get actual surround sound out of this old kit
currently using TOSlink to soundbar (2.1) which sometimes (rarely) tries to fake it ("TruSurround").
My-Eyes-Glaze-Over scanning marketing hype ( auto-configures! bluetooth/wireless! ),
but snag on phrases like "just use our app" or HDMI-ARC … or "virtual".
( Frequency-scan tones for hearing loss analysis would help adjust equalizer, if available. )

You might try Pulse Effects ( mx Package installer ) ... it took some laying with some of the settings, but I have my very old surround sound unit working nicely. ( sub woofer, mids plus very nice treble once I spent a little time with working it.)

Thanks. ( query led to easyeffects at github ) Includes equalizer and more.
I've been thinking about replacing current soundbar, but with what? Likely don't need 400W when 10W will do.

Depending upon your sound card and connections, the Razor Nommo are pretty amazing sounding. I am probably headed there for my next set of speakers.

Machine:
Type: Desktop Mobo: ASRock model: KBL-NUC serial: <superuser required>
    UEFI-[Legacy]: American Megatrends v: P2.00B date: 02/13/2019
I run a external amp and this new box has no headphone jack.
So Got around this limitation hopefully with one of these.
USB 2.0 External 7.1 Channel 3D Virtual Sound Card Mic Adapter Laptop PC #15 NEW
Cost was $2.50 approx. Free shipping. Pipewire hopefully should pick it up just fine including alsa maybe.
