Audio on some websites is very low, muffled and distorted

#1 Post by Yunoha »

Hey,

since my installation of MXLinux I have audio problems on some websites using librewolf browser. It sounds very low and distorted. On other websites, there is not a problem, e.g. youtube. It is also no problem of my current browser, as it happens in other browser as well. I looked a lot around about this problem but could not find helpful solutions.

Below are my QSI. However, this also happens on another laptop with MX installed, and it is from another manufacturer (Acer).

Very happy about any help. Thanks.

I would do two things:
1) use Repo Manager --> Individual Sources tab to enable the AHS (Advanced Hardware Systems) repo and then update your computer
2) Use MXPI to install a Liquorix kernel. The 6.9.xxx would be a good starting point, but be prepared to experiment a bit to get the best fit. There's ample evidence here in the forums that Ryzen base systems perform better with a Liquorix kernel.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I always thought it was due to the site giving you low-volume audio. Even some YouTube videos vary quite a bit. Maybe you could check with another OS, even in a Live session, to see if it's just MX.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

So I enabled AHS and installed the Liquorix Kernel 6.9.12.

However, the change in audio is only of minor extent. I do not think it can be enhanced with another liquorix kernel.

Also, I have the comparison with Windows a few weeks ago, where this problem is not evident with the same Browser configuration. Otherwise, I have no comparison with a linux-based OS.

Which websites are you having problems with?
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

I wonder if there's some automatic volume level control available for pipewire or pulseaudio.

I assume that you tried "pavucontrol".

Some websites are for example reddit or dailymotion.

I have looked at pavucontrol. However, when looking at Configuration, there are two possiblities:
1. Rembrandt Radeon High Definition Audio: There are some possiblities there, but they are all "unavailable" (Except ProAudio, but the audio problems are still existent when choosing this=
2. Family 17h/19h HD Audio

Edit: It is not just a problem of how loud the audio is, it is also very distorted.

If you run from the liveUSB, is this also happening?
